Review by Rat de bibliotheque1 -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders is written by Brian O’ Hare. The story is set in Northern Ireland, Belfast, where a judge has been mysteriously murdered, following a party attended by an eclectic group of a few rich and famous guests. DCI Jim Sheehan and his team are called to the crime scene where they will start their investigation.
The team needs to decide if any of the guests attending the party could have had a grudge against the judge or if he had made enemies from the people he had sentenced. He had a reputation for being cruel, always giving the maximum sentence and never showing any compassion. So, two lines of inquiries will begin, interviewing the eleven guests from the party and looking at the list of six criminals known to have issued threats against the judge. The team will need to investigate why such a varied group of people, with no obvious links of friendship to the judge were invited to the party. They will question the guests as well as the criminals, one by one, to figure out if any of them could have had a motive to want the judge dead. When another brutal murder takes place, the mystery thickens as the two murders are without any doubt linked.
At the same time, the reader will learn about the murders through the writings of a psychopath who has a blog on the dark Web. He describes how he is the righter of wrongs, how he murders in a cold and calculative manner the people who in his eyes deserve it. He is very intelligent, extremely well read, often quotes passages from the Bible, literature and philosophical books. He takes enormous pleasure in his acts of vengeance. The police will eventually find the blog, but will reading it help them to find the murderer before he or she strikes again?
The investigation is carried out by a great team of police officers led by Jim Sheehan, they are experienced, intelligent and will need to use their intuition to solve the murders. The main characters, Jim and his colleague Sergeant Stewart are completely dedicated to solving the case. The other character central to the story is of course the blogger, a terrifying and manipulative person whose motives are completely unknown.
The plot is easy to follow, very mysterious and chilling. It is written in the third person and Brian O’Hare describes in great detail the thoughts of Jim Sheehan and of the mysterious blogger.
This book will undoubtedly appeal to all the fans of thrillers, it has a really mysterious feel about it and is extremely well written. I really enjoyed the story and the pace. I thought learning about the murders through the eyes of the police and those of the murderer added a really clever and unusual twist.
I rate this book 4 out of 4
