In Time For Redemption, a thrilling crime novel by Susan C. Muller, Kara Grimes has been arrested for the murder of her abusive husband, Devin, in Houston, Texas. Tom Meyers, a well-established defense attorney, takes an interest in her case and offers to take her on as his client. Helping him is Fiona Drake, an investigator and hacker who lives in a van she’s named Bluebeard. Fiona discovers that Devin had a second life in Louisiana. She heads to Louisiana to see what else she can find out, but she catches the attention of the wrong people. Then she is abducted, and Tom has to do everything he can to find her. Will Tom find Fiona alive? How many secrets did Devin have, and did they kill him? And if Kara is innocent, will Tom and Fiona be able to prove it?

As I mentioned above, Kara’s husband is abusive. It is mostly emotional and mental abuse and is mainly shown in the first chapter. The other times it is mentioned is when Kara is thinking about something Devin said or did.

Secrets are a big part of this book and gave the story multiple layers. Not only does Devin have a lot of secrets, Kara also has some of her own. The slow reveal of Kara’s secrets left me unsure of her guilt or innocence for most of the book. This intrigue was my favorite part of the book as I was always wondering what would be revealed next and how all of the pieces fit together. This gradual revealing of secrets and the truth, mixed with moments of action, gave the story a fast, steady pace that I enjoyed.

The characters are all interesting and well-written. They aren’t one-dimensional, and the regular shifts in point of view between the main characters helped me get to know them. I was immediately sympathetic towards Kara because of Devin. Kara seems very meek at first but quickly shows that she is more clever and determined than she appears. Fiona is strong, independent, and rough around the edges after growing up in foster care and living on the streets for a time, but she is very dedicated to her job and finding the truth. By the end of the book, I really liked her. Tom came across as self-centered and a bit greedy at first because of the descriptions of his cars, his home, and his motivations for offering to defend Kara. However, he shows that he is passionate about his job, and he holds honesty and integrity in high esteem because his father lacked those qualities. He also cares about Fiona and is willing to do whatever he has to to get her back.

Overall, I really liked this book, and there was nothing I disliked about it. There were, unfortunately, more than ten errors, but they were not frequent and did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. However, since there were more than ten, I can only rate it 3 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries and crime thrillers. Due to the plot, descriptions of abuse, and some profanity, it is not suitable for younger audiences. As I said before, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be checking out the author’s other books.

Thanks for your interesting review. Kara's secrets make the story sounds so suspenseful, since the readers will go from supporting her to doubting and wondering if they are doing the correct thing. Some may even try to solve the case themselves :).

Their relationship is portrayed more like siblings than romance.
