Official Review: Tell Me No Secret by Brandon Ellrich

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Tell Me No Secret" by Brandon Ellrich.]
Tell Me No Secret by Brandon Ellrich introduces the reader to Joseph and his high school friends. Joseph had been friends with Brad for a long time. However, they drifted apart over time as Brad hung out with a rowdy and mischievous crowd. To fit in with his new friends, Brad became rebellious and committed petty crimes. He got away with a lot of mischiefs until he murdered one of his classmates. He later confided in Joseph and shared what had transpired and how stoked he was to carry out such an act without getting caught. Burdened by his friend’s secret, Joseph devised a plan to stop Brad in his tracks. Can innocent Joseph put an end to his friend’s mischief? The answer to this question is revealed alongside a series of other serious crimes committed by high school kids.
The novel is a page-turner with only 128 pages and covers themes like murder and sex. However, details surrounding these themes are not too explicit or overly detailed. The story starts with the revelation of the secret. From there on, the author works his way back to the events that transpired before the murders.
I had expected that the first couple of chapters would build-up to the revelation or confession, but that was not the case as the author divulges the secret right at the beginning of the book. After learning of the big murder secret, I wondered if there was anything more to look forward to, and to my delight, there was. As more secrets surfaced, the mystery, suspense, and thrill kept on building up. I can safely say that the storyline became increasingly interesting after the confession. The book does not slow down as another disgruntled character opened another can of worms at the end. The ending deserves a book of its own. Sadly, there is no mention of a sequel.
The story was narrated from the first-person perspective. The narrators changed from one scene to the next, but the switch and transition were smooth as I could tell the narrators apart with ease.
There was nothing to dislike about this book. The twists and turns the storyline took were captivating. Characters were well developed and contributed meaningfully to the storyline. The editing was impeccable; I only came across a few punctuation errors. The book has many positive aspects and contains minor profanity.
For the reasons stated above, I am awarding the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
Tell Me No Secret is best suited to readers who enjoy crime, thrillers, mysteries, and drama. It will also appeal to young adults because of the storyline’s setting.
