Official Review: Rogue Squad by Bill Freeman
Rogue Squad, by Bill Freeman, follows Mariner, a detective in the "Organized Crime Unit of the Toronto Police Department." One day, he was summoned by the police chief and asked to carry out an internal investigation, involving "Drug Squad Two" of the department and three drug dealers. Three lawyers had come to complain that, a while ago, the squad had raided the homes of their clients and stolen huge sums of money from them. Their clients dealt drugs.
Lodging a complaint of police corruption would surely attract attention to the drug dealers, and that would be bad for them and their businesses. Then, why did they do it? Was it a setup to get the police off their backs, or was the drug squad of five detectives actually guilty of the crime?
Being the second book in the Mariner’s Story series, Rogue Squad is well written and suspenseful. As I started reading it, I didn't want to close it. Though it's a short read, comprising 155 pages, it doesn't feel rushed. All its events are brief and fascinating. Besides, it has a strong plot, and it ends in a satisfactory manner. Containing police interviews and crime analyses, it's comprehensible and intriguing.
The first page drew me into the book. I love the author's easy writing style. Moreover, he's good at narrative. He described the events and scenes in a concise and entertaining way, which made me feel like I was watching a police procedural.
Concerning the characters, there are enough details about them that make them lifelike. Most of the characters are police officers, and Mariner, the focal character, is an interesting person to read about. With his own family issues, he still remained calm and focused. He was able to crack the case within a short period of time. Besides, in spite of what they do, the drug dealers are still intriguing.
There's nothing I don't like about the book, except that the author didn't divide it into chapters or give chapter headings. Such things make a book more attractive. However, I commend the author for providing a short and compelling story.
In conclusion, I rate Rogue Squad 4 out of 4 stars. I didn't give it a lower rating since it's coherent and entertaining. In addition, it was well edited; I saw only a couple of grammar errors. Though readers who don't like crime fiction may not want to read it, it'll be enjoyed by fans of crime and mystery books, particularly those who love police procedurals.
