Review by Adven Simarmata -- Tinman by Karen Black
The book Tinman by Karen Black told a fiction story about a geotechnical-engineering man that was given a mysterious task by his best friend, Charley. Charley had already prepared all the necessary equipment for Greg to do the task, such as a round trip ticket, a credit card, a driver’s license, which were all in a fake identity, money, hotel reservation, and Charley’s apartment key. However, Charley was murdered before he could meet Greg to give the information about the task. Therefore, Greg was clueless about the task and wondered what the task had to do with Charley’s murder. Would he be in danger if he continued doing the mission? Greg was in a dilemma whether he should go back to his house and tell the police all he knew or continue doing the task and search for the clues of what the task was about. He chose the latter option. Staying undercover, he began his full-of-terror journey in solving the mysterious task for his dead best friend. His adventure was accompanied by a beautiful girl, Corky, who also shared the same loss of Charley, he met at the beginning of the journey. Along with fear and stress in doing the mission, love was growing between Greg and Corky. Could they solve the mysterious task safely? Or did they or one of them end up dead?
What I liked the most about the novel was the unexpected, big events throughout the story that kept me eager to continue reading the novel. The novel described detailed, interesting ways for the main characters to stay undercover and escape the dangers during the mission. The detailed description of the horrifying scene made me feel as if I was really in the story. It also gave detailed information about engineering business that enriched my knowledge. The novel also provided a good number of good humor. Each character has strong, unique characters. For example, Greg as the main character was consistently skeptical and paranoid throughout the story.
What I did not like about the novel was some of the storylines were too smooth or too unrealistic to be true. Although the romantic story between Greg and Corky was beautifully depicted, it was not emotionally engaging since the reasons they fell in love with each other were described plainly.
The book was professionally edited since I did not find any grammatical or misspelled errors. With all those positive and negative aspects, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Despite the negative aspects I mentioned above, the story in this book could fascinatingly imprint in my memory.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy thrillful story that involves crime, adventure, and mystery. People who love to know about spying, escaping, and disguise tactics might love this book since those tactics described in this book were interesting and intellectually stimulating. Romance lovers might also enjoy this book since this book also provides a pretty good romantic story.
