Review of The Prize
The Prize by Geoffrey M. Cooper is a medical thriller revolving around an extraordinary scientific invention. A drug to cure Alzheimer’s has been invented by a dedicated young scientist Pamela Weller (Pam). But this infuses jealousy and rage on Eric Prescott, a leading scientist on the field of Alzheimer’s research. The invention poses a threat to Eric’s dreams of being a Nobel prize laureate. As the forces of selfishness, greed and jealousy start wreaking havoc in the lives of the researchers, the gentleness of humanity is lost.
After years of hardwork Pam along with her postdocs George and Holly, finally find a drug with the potency to cure Alzheimer's disease. But a dispute arises when Holly starts believing that she isn't being given adequate credit for her work. This glint of greed in Holly's mind leads her to seek the help of Eric and together they devise a plan to steal the drug. But when the plan is enacted, what would be the consequences?
The contrasts between Pam’s and Eric's characters are beautifully narrated in the book. On one side Pam is described as a hardworking woman who strongly believes in her dreams and works with the pure intention of discovering a drug to help the society. On the other hand Eric is portrayed as a cruel man, running behind fame and money, one who is not afraid to traverse unethical paths to reach the finish line of an imaginary race. When a person's sole focus is fixed on fame and wealth, he starts going to unimaginable extents to satisfy his greed.
The character building was brilliant in the book. Pam's character was very inspiring and motivating. To quote an example ”She’d gone into research to make a difference, not to follow the crowd”; this shows us that she was confident and determined, the perfect traits we expect in a leading researcher.
The Prize is a fast paced, gripping, quick read. At many instances during the reading journey I was so angry with the events taking place and I wanted to do was to console Pam. I felt extremely sorry for her. The mystery in this book is not about finding who was wrong but about witnessing how the truth unravels. Despite the fact that it is a medical thriller, the language was quite simple and easy to understand. The use of medicine jargon was very minimal.
The book was very well edited and I couldn't find any major grammatical or typographical errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . The components including plot, character building, style of narration and editing were really good. I did not find any noticeable flaws in the book. The Prize surely is a book that can raise the reader’s adrenaline levels.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in reading mystery/thrillers and anyone looking for a fast paced novel.
