Review of The Prize
The hunger for fame and power can be justified because it is only part of the true nature of humans but it will be questionable if that hunger will turn into a transgression. The Prize by Geoffrey M. Cooper is a fascinating piece that tells us about the story of two scientists and their quest for glory in the field.
Being a renowned scientist and researcher in the field of Neuroscience, Professor Eric Prescott seemed to be full of confidence in obtaining his next target; which is the Nobel Prize. His accomplishment on producing mice models that can develop Alzheimer’s disease led him to the peak of his career. But things don’t always go in favor of him.
Pam Weller is not yet prominent but little did she know that her life will soon change. She is versatile and dedicated to reach her goal in finding the treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Pam’s several years of research has finally paid off but things messed up and her name got tangled in a fraud issue. Clearing her name is like a mission impossible but with the help of Jake, they will unravel the truth behind the curtain of mysteries.
As a science person that aspire to accomplish a remarkable breakthrough in the field, the reality of this novel is quite fascinating and disturbing. It portrays the struggles of different scientists just to have recognition with their works and sometimes it becomes toxic. I like the plot of the story because it does not only shows the good side but it also shows the bad side of the scientific field.
This book is amazing but it will not erase the fact that it has flaws like any other novels out there. Upon reading the story, I was a bit disappointed when it comes to the complexity of the characters. It will be highly appreciated if the background of the characters will be more detailed and the side characters like Vicky and George will have more exposure. Remember that this is not just a Sci-Fi genre but it has a mix of Crime, Mystery and Thriller so I do not fully appreciate the fact that the pieces of information were spoon fed to the readers. It will be more exciting if the story will make the readers think and wonder.
It will be just fair enough to give The Prize a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The story is amazingly written and well executed. I did not find any grammatical or typographical errors while carefully reading the book. The novel contains some light profanity but no sexually explicit scenes. Overall, I think that it is professionally edited.
This is highly recommended to those who love Sci-Fi and Crime genres. It will be an entertaining literature to researchers, scientists, and even students who wish to work for the scientific field someday. Readers who are also new to this genre should not worry because the terms were made simple so that anyone can enjoy the beauty of this novel.
