The book, The Darkness at Decker Lake by Martin H. Zuckerman is set in a small retirement community in upper New York State. This senior community has a general store, delivery service, a clubhouse which was not used very often and a place to eat called Jesse's Tavern, which served up some pretty good meals. The lake was surrounded by homes and the others went off on the paths that led around the lake. It was a peaceful place to live, most of the residents kept to themselves, occasionally meeting up with one another at Jesse's Tavern. Harvey who is a con man, dealing in small time petty fraud is looking for bigger and better ways to make a living. Eventually Harvey buys Jesse's Tavern in the hopes of defrauding this senior community. As time goes on, he involves a couple who knew his parents and was also cons. Together they will help make this scheme of Harvey's work. What Harvey doesn't know, is that not all the residents in this community are who he thinks they are. What starts out as a simple con of the elderly, evolves into mayhem and murder.

I thought this book was written very well. I enjoyed it very much. The author Martin H. Zuckerman had you feeling like you lived in this small retirement community. You could picture yourself sitting by this lake and just enjoying the view, listening to the birds sing and feel the warmth of the sun on your face. The way he describes each character, giving you their height and weight and the color of their hair, gave you a sense of who they were. You could picture them as if they were your friend or foe. Excellent visual!

There wasn't really anything I disliked. In this 233 page book, there were 35 chapters, some of the chapters were only three or four pages long, and I think a few of these chapters could have been combined together. There was the main characters and then the people in the community and keeping them all straight was sometimes a little confusing.

I give this book, The Darkness at Decker Lake 4 out of 4 stars. This book seems like it has been professionally edited; Martin H. Zuckerman has done a wonderful job on this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves thriller, mystery, murder, revenge and justice. Readers who are sensitive to violence my find this book a tad bit graphic, but all in all this was a very well put together thriller.
