The Commander: The Last Enemy Series Prequel by Dan E. Hendrickson. About a man named Jacob Edwards and his adventures starts as a part of America’s Coast Guard/Naval pirate task force in the Caribbean. He is bound to protect his country while being a family man. Because of his excellent capabilities, he is promoted to be a commander to be the lead in refurbished Hamilton class-cutter, First Responder. News regarding terrorist attack circulates and become a secret mission. Different high-profile names are involved that will make the situation complicated. But Edwards allies are worth having for a good fight.

Hendrickson shows a lot of known facts about the operations in the Coast Guard. He shows compelling characters and plots. The topics of drugs, terrorism is common, but he greatly developed them to provide a tremendous action story. The scenes are vivid in my imagination like I was seeing a movie. I am immersed in Lt. Jacob Edwards's character. His traits are what defenders of every country should have.

What I like most in The Commander is Hendrickson didn’t only focus on the main character. As every person has their own story, bit by bit, he allows us to see the hidden perspective of every character. Protagonist or antagonist, their tales of life are weighed equally. Good traits such as braveness, caring for others, affection, and devotion for our beloved country are shown drastically. The book empowered lessons to live on.

The bad side of the book is when it comes to the names of the characters. I got confused because the name is different from who should it refer to in one of the scenes. There is definite information about the said character but a different name is written. I longed for more action scenes, but it didn’t give me so much satisfaction.

I rated the book, 4 out of 4 stars . The novel is good but has some minor editing issues regarding the names. Precisely, I said my concern about the book but it didn’t affect my disposition for giving a high rating. Yes, it didn’t show broad action happenings, still, I want it to recommend because Hendrickson’s skills in writing are exceptional. There are no extreme erotic scenes. It is clear and favorable to put on your must-read lists. Twists, plots are solid that make me yearn more and look forward to his works.
