Review of Demon Freaks
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison tells a gripping story of two twin brothers, Ron and Bing Slaughter. Our two protagonists start as seemingly normal teenagers with mundane high school students' worries. Their history teacher is a horrible bully, they're wholly underprepared for their SATs the next day and an incident involving a school dance and a condescending song about said history teacher threatens to have them both expelled from school. They definitely didn't ask for any more trouble to deal with, let alone supernatural demonic trouble.
However, that is exactly what they get in the form of Mr. Brom, their history teacher showing up at their friend, Meat's cabin in the woods with a possessed dagger in hand and a killer's intent in mind. What was originally meant to be a last-ditch study session to save their SAT scores instead ends up being a wild and frantic chase with their friends, Meat and Kaitlyn to save the world from impending doom.
I really enjoyed the book. J.R.R.R Hardison's writing is witty and captivating. The usage of humor to elevate the very scary situations the twins find themselves in is refreshing and the chapters flow exceedingly well, even though they cycle through multiple points of view of different characters.
The plot is engaging and though some small questions are left unanswered, it doesn't affect the story too much. The plot twists are enough to leave the reader in momentary disbelief but at the same time, not crazy enough to be out of the question. Many times, old plot points are brought back to fruition and it's very satisfying to see.
One thing I didn't like was how some characters were handled. While some characters like the twins and Meat had compelling and heartwarming character arcs, other characters seemed neglected. Kaitlyn was one of the main characters present for nearly the entire book yet didn't seem to have much to her character. Her repetitive lines and flat personality made her seem one-dimensional. I can't find much reason for her character to even exist in the story besides one or two important things she did. Characters like the dagger and the chick commandos sadly were also lost potential.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no errors and the overall plotline makes up for any small overviews of character development. I recommend this book to all mystery, horror and supernatural story lovers over the age of 16, as the book contains light profanity and vague nudity. The book also mentions sensitive issues such as religious sacrilege.
