Friends are either made by choice, or by circumstances beyond our control. The latter is the case of Philip and Wayne in the book Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland.

Philip became friends with Wayne only because he was friends with Stevie, his best friend. However, without Stevie in the picture, can Philip stop being friends with Wayne? Wayne, who is known for his mischievous behaviour, comes from a dysfunctional home that he tried his best to put behind him. With a violent brother and a mother who could care less, if he lived or died, the only things that kept him going were his friendship with Stevie and Philip—even though he always got them into trouble— and his love interest, Tina.

Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a story about friendship, loyalty, family, complicated relationships and crime. It is a book that promises to keep you on the edge of your imagination's seat.

The first thing that caught my attention about this book was its ability to draw readers in as they proceed into the book. The author got me glued from the very first chapter of this book because of how engaging the story is. Also, I loved the fact that this book was written in the first-person narrative, which I think contributed to how well the author was able to carry readers along.

Another thing I loved about this book was the great character development. For instance, I loved how the character known as Wayne was portrayed in such a way that he grew from the boy who came from a filthy home to an adult that held it together when it comes to tidying up after himself. In addition to this, I loved how there was a bit of a love story between Wayne and his girlfriend, but the author was able to tell it without distracting the reader from the main story.

The author also did a great job of making this book a suspense-filled one. I almost felt like I was watching a crime series, especially when the character, Philip, went on his detective mission. It made me look forward to the next discovery, which kept me hooked until I was done with the book. This is one book I loved how the author ended it, but I am not about to give any spoilers here, so I would leave you to find out for yourself.

I applaud the author for a story well-told because there was absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. Although there were a few typographical errors, this did not in any way stop me from enjoying this beautiful piece. For this reason, I am happy to rate this book nothing less than four out of four stars.

This book will appeal to adult readers who enjoy crime-centred stories like this one. On the other hand, I won’t recommend this book to readers who are not of age, only because of the profanities that were used a lot in it.
