Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a provocative and absorbing horror novel. It embraces supernatural fantasy, mixing comedy, action, and adventure. I have always loved horror stories that start like any other normal story before we are met by a twist and turn. This is absolutely what the author gave us here.

Twins, Ron and Bing, seem to have only two worries in life; the upcoming SATs and their music band. After they leave a boring History lesson, they opt to go and study in their friend's, Meat, cabin. Joined by a fourth friend, Kaitlyn, they thought they would be having an ordinary evening. Little did they know that fate had different plans for them. Their evil History teacher pops up at the cabin with a mysterious dagger. He looked possessed. The whole evening takes a sudden twist after the twins' friends get kidnapped by evil golfers. Ron and Bing get trapped on a mission to save their friends. Will they manage to rescue their friends and still have time to sit for their exams?

This novel's strength lies in its unforgettable protagonists. They were crafted with great complexity and stunning individuality. They are three-dimensional, and that makes them seem authentic and very relatable. Both of them are brilliant, and they both have flaws. Identity lies at the heart of the book, fed by competition and conflict. We get to know what will happen next at the same time as the characters. As a reader, I had no choice but to be engrossed in the novel. I was thumping page after page, eager to find out what will happen next and not willing to put the book down.

The other thing that was compelling about this book was the writing. It was sweeping, vast, comedic, and wondrous. The style is intensely thoughtful and descriptive, although rarely to the point of being unnecessarily wordy. Some parts of this book had a near cinematic experience. The prose flows smoothly and beautifully from word to word, from paragraph to paragraph. The action was breathtaking.

As much as I enjoyed reading this book, it had some notable downsides. We did not get to experience much of Kaitlyn. Most readers who would have wanted to like her character will feel disappointed. The only thing about her personality that we got to know was that she takes long showers. Kaitlyn was one-dimensional, and that makes it hard to relate with her as a character.

Although there were areas where the author could have done better, I still loved reading this book. The editing was professional, and it was entertaining. Since I enjoyed the story, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I must mention that many people will not like this book because of its scarcity of female characters. Anyone who enjoys reading horror should give it a read.
