Review of Relics
Relics by John Vandeventer centers on the series of horrific episodes in Talihina, Oklahoma, and its environs. The book recounts the journey of law enforcement agents to control and put an end to these episodes. Addison Redstone believes that the town is under siege from an ancient tribe, while the rest believes a mysterious animal is their predator. Addison tries to convince his son, who is the police chief, of the truth that these creatures do exist. Whatever be the narrative, Talihina needs an answer, and they need it fast.
Vandeventer delivers action, suspense, and emotion in this debut book of his. He opens the book with an intense scene and does not let up on the intrigue till the end of the book. The author presents readers with twists in the plot to keep them guessing and wondering what's next.
For one thing, this book is well written. The language is simple and flows seamlessly. The author carefully outlines the story with dates, time, and location of scenes making it relatively easy for readers to trace and follow the occurrences in the book.
A lot of research went into the writing of this book. The author presents detailed knowledge of not just the dynamics and hierarchy of law enforcement agencies, being that he is an ex-force man himself, but also of the traditions of the Choctaw people. Vandeventer describes the town of Tahilina and its inhabitants in a way that draws readers in and compels them to fall in love with this tight-knit town and its people.
One astounding thing in this book is the strength and personality the author gives his characters. The author put in a lot of work creating solid characters. Readers can identify with some of the characters, from the sly sadistic lawyer, the town gossip, the smothering mother, the zealous female officers, the uninformed students' right fighters, the outlaw bikers, and of course, to the dedicated law officers. From the beginning of the book, we see characters that are strong yet kind, scared but brave, and old yet fearless. Even the rumored mythical creatures are given so much character, making them appear natural.
As if to ease the intensity of the drama in the book, Vandeventer introduces romance and humor. This, of course, has the desired effect of calming readers at the peak of terrifying action. We are not only left wondering about the mythical creatures and their activities, but we are also excitedly following love triangles and blossoming emotions.
This book is a thriller and will appeal to lovers of ancient myth. I rate this book four out of four stars, as there's nothing to dislike about it.
