Review of Mixed Blessings
At times, I wonder how people feel when they define a fellow human being by his or her skin colour. I often ask myself, if I were to be White, would I be racial? Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse, is a book that helps us question our identity; it also uncovers the effect of racial war and how harmful it could be to a society.
The author starts by telling us about a girl, Kimberly, she was born to a Mexican dad and a Jewish mom. She was travelling to meet her other family in Juarez. Kimberly isn't the protagonist in the novel though. The main character in this book is Micheal Kublai Khan from The House of Jeremiah Temples. Kublai Khan was one of many Blacks who got tired of the oppression from the White, he was tired of being seen as a minority by the government. Kublai decides to do all within his power to make sure that his fellow Blacks get the life that they deserve in the future. Kublai and his fellow leaders of other races, come up with a plan; this plan will not only create a way for Blacks, but it will also affect Whites negatively. What could it be they have in mind?
The book was a very good read, I enjoyed every page in the book. The author did not only write about racial conflict, but he also narrated how much an effect religion has on this everyday crisis. Pastor Dalton was the funniest character in this book. I found it very hilarious that a man talked to mice. The plot in this book was realistic. The scenes were well-developed and detailed. Making a movie version of this novel would be nice.
There was nothing to hate about the book. The storyline was intriguing, and I found some characters in this book very funny. I also liked how the author explained the Mexican family culture to his readers. The book is very educative and informative. The characters in the book were well-developed. I felt bad for Kimberly when she was racial bullied by her friends. I liked the fact that Kublai was standing up for his right, but I didn't like the way he was going about the whole thing. Considering the current happenings in the world now, this book is an eye-opener.
I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was professionally edited. I found only a few mistakes, which did not stop me from enjoying the book. I think that seeing someone beyond his or her race is a bold step to make the world a better place. I recommend this book to people who love reading about political thrillers.
