Review of Tinman
[Following is a volunteer review of "Tinman" by Karen Black.]
Tinman by Karen Black is a romantic thriller. The thrills unfold as we follow the footsteps of Gregory McGregor. The book starts with a phone call from a long-time friend, Charley Farnsworth, telling Greg that he couldn't discuss the details of a situation involving nine digits over the phone and needs to talk to him in person immediately. The first thrilling experience Greg has is a bomb exploding at his own home. Engineer Greg now dons the “spy” hat, a new thrill for him, as he needs to find out what is behind this rendezvous with Charley. Unfortunately, Charley was mugged by two guys near the library, the designated meeting place, before the meeting took place. Greg has another mystery to solve. You will need to read the book to see what other kinds of thrills “spy” Greg encounters and how he handles each situation. This book is filled with thrills to keep you turning the pages to discover what excitement happens next.
The romantic thrill is with Greg and Consuela “Corky” Gonzales. They first meet at Charley’s Aspen home while Corky is house sitting. It doesn't take long for the romantic candle to be lit, adding another layer of thrills.
After some thought, Greg decided it was better to have Corky as a traveling companion. I couldn’t help but think of them as another Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson duo. They had frequent discussions between themselves to help decide what to do next. Reading about how two new spies approach each thrill kept me intrigued and anxious to read about the outcome of their decisions.
Black did an excellent job of developing the personalities making the interaction between the characters interesting. Some of the reactions were predictable, but the excitement was still there to keep my eyes glued to the pages.
I enjoyed how Black brought the pages to life for me with her detailed descriptions. I had no trouble visualizing what was happening. It was like watching a movie for me while reading.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes spy thrills and adventure. Romance fans might also enjoy this as well as love does blossom. There is a sense of violence and sexual references that might not be suitable for the younger readers.
Overall, I found Tinman a very well-written book. I can honestly say I didn’t like anything about the book. I found this book professionally edited as I only found one error. Kudos to Black for completing the work Matt Walton started. I am happy to give this book the highest rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
