Review of E M P Honeymoon
E M P Honeymoon: Kelly & Tom by Dorothy May Mercer is an espionage novel for crime and suspense lovers. Its action-packed plot delivers enough thrills to keep readers on the edge of their seats and eagerly turning the pages.
Kelly McBride is on her honeymoon in a dream Caribbean resort. She is ecstatically happy. After all, she just married the man of her dreams, Sergeant Tom Turbulo. As she wanders around the gift shops looking for souvenirs, the last thing she expected was to stumble upon a covert operation. As she is chased down the streets by some dodgy looking characters, her mind keeps racing with frantic thoughts. Who are these people? What secret operation did she stumble upon? Can her new husband, Tom, save her, or will it be too late?
I listened to the audible version of this book, and it was just under 7 hours long. I couldn’t take notes of any errors for the reason I mentioned above. It was also difficult to point out the profanities or strong language on the pages, so I could only take note of the chapters. Nonetheless, listening to the story made the visual imagery more colourful for me. The narrator, Scott Ellis, did a fantastic job bringing the plot to life. His voice was clear, and the inflexion was perfect. Switching accents and voice pitches to imitate the different characters and scenarios made the entire story very compelling.
I also like the plot. It is fast-paced yet easy to follow. Once again, I applaud the narrator for making this possible. At the end of each chapter and sometimes each scene, he apprises the reader of what is to follow. The story doesn’t lag or get boring, and he makes it easy to get engrossed in the whole narration.
The lead characters are well-developed and easily identifiable. I love the budding romance between Steve and Sharon. The chemistry between the newlyweds, Kelly and Tom, is a bit questionable, though. I expected more affection between them, and I didn’t get that from the narration. Nevertheless, the author, Dorothy May Mercer, pulled together an amazing array of characters. Even the main antagonist, Dear Leader, came across as he should, a ruthless oppressor who wanted world domination. Though fictional, he actually bears an eerie similarity to a present-day world leader which makes the plot more relatable.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and it deserves 4 out of 4 stars. It is a solid narrative with some humorous dialogues, and its focus on present-day themes such as terrorism, ills of technology e.t.c, deserves accolades. As stated earlier, it is an audible version, so I couldn’t take note of errors. It does contain a little bit of profanity, so sensitive/younger readers should beware. It would be suitable for mature lovers of espionage/spy books.
