Veterans Day is a detective and mystery novel by J. J. Jorgens. This is my first time to read a detective novel and it turned out to be a fascinating read. Its plot is built in Washington D.C. It has themes which include corruption, love, bribery, murder, and racism. It is divided into small chapters, which makes it easy to read and understand.

Mary Jane Morris is a thirty-eight-years-old detective who is devoted to justice. David McHale (Davy) was Mary Jane's detective partner. Both were devoted to enforcing the law by providing evidence against criminals which made them have a number of enemies. On Halloween's day, Davy calls Mary Jane and tells her that he needs her help. Mary Jane rushes to his partner's office but finds him when he has committed suicide. She observes the crime scene and finds clues that show that it was not suicide but her partner was murdered. She embarks on a mission to find the people who killed her partner and bring then to face the law. Their is a conspiracy that Mary Jane gets to know about and you can know it by getting yourself a copy of this mystery novel.

The thing that I liked most about the novel is that the author starts by writing a statement which causes the reader to predict how the novel will end. The author builds the storyline in a way that the statement is right but the predictions of the reader are not right. This made the novel totally unpredictable and fascinating. The characters are well developed even those that are not so important in the storyline. The author mentions a brief history of each character about how they are related to the protagonist.

The thing that I disliked about the novel is the author's style of narration. The novel is narrated from a first-person point of view by the protagonist and the author uses reported speech to record words of characters. This causes confusion about which character is exactly speaking the words. The scenes are not well developed. Some events in the novel change abruptly which leaves the reader wondering how the following events come about.

The novel was professionally edited. I rate the novel 4 out of 4 stars because it has scenes that create suspense in the reader's mind. It has few instances profane words and lacks erotic scenes. I recommend it to readers of mystery and detective novels.

I really like unpredictable novels. Who killed David? How will Mary find the culprit? What kind of clues did she find? I would love to read this book to know the whole story. Thanks for the great review.
