Wolfgang’s Castle by Rex W. Last follows multiple people to stop a new weapon developed by Hitler for World War II. It primarily follows Jenny, who is in the right place and the right time during training for the British Army, and Archie, who is in charge of Special Operations for the British Army; it also follows Wolfgang, who is a German man living with his family in rural Bavaria attempting to help as many Jews escape Nazi rule as they can. This unlikely group comes together to set a plan in motion to destroy one of Hitler’s more sinister and potentially war-changing projects.

I found this story to be very intriguing. Jenny’s entry into the group was a great way to explain what women did for the war and how they had the potential to make real change and help during the war. She and Archie’s character development was beautiful to read, and you rooted for them the entire time. Wolfgang and his wife, along with his physician friend Johann were just what you imagined they would be in real life. Last wrote Wolfgang and Johann’s mission in helping Jews and others to be incredibly believable and heartfelt. The book was also very well edited.

The only negative I had for this novel is that it took a while to get to the main aspects of the plot. The background and how they all ended up together took about 75% of the book, so I would have liked to spend more time on the actual mission and aftermath. I feel that the aftermath was underwritten, and I would have loved more details about how everyone ended up doing because Rex W. Last made you feel very connected to the characters.

I gave Wolfgang’s Castle a 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the entire book, and it makes you think about times like World War II and how much went into projects that no one will ever know about. I appreciated Jenny’s role throughout the entire book, proving that a woman during that time was just as, if not more valuable than anyone was giving them credit for. I especially loved that throughout this diverse group, everyone saw themselves as equals and focused on the mission while having immense respect for all the other members, no matter their background.

If you like the World War II genre, this book is for you. I thought it had a wonderful mix of action, romance, mystery, and suspense. I loved how in-depth the story went on what it took to make this mission happen, and just how many people had to be involved for it to work. Because of all the technical terms, young adult readers may have a more difficult time getting into the story, although there is a term dictionary at the end of the book. I feel like anyone who enjoys wartime fiction should give Wolfgang’s Castle a read.
