The Church at Mt. Zion is a fictional novel that tells the story of a people lost to religion and in search of redemption. It is both disturbing and intriguing as one cannot help but be fascinated to explore how a group of people can be seduced by the fiery words of one man and follow him down a path that will lead to their ultimate demise. The book covers themes of religion, the occult, crime and conspiracy.

Elijah Craig is a man lost, in search of redemption, and completely reliant on the lord of his understanding for direction. At his lowest point he comes upon the people of Mt. Zion, sure that this is god’s inheritance for him. He is a man looking for a church, a flock to lead, a place and people where he can excise his demons and find redemption from his past. His plan is not clearly outlined but he is determined to follow the lord’s lead and shepherd the people so that they will be saved from their sins.

The people of Mt. Zion are a simple group. They work the land and live off of its bounty. Located in a rural town in North Carolina, the residents have lived for decades undisturbed by the influences of big cities and fast talkers. Founded by a handful of families, this community has its own set of traditions and celebrations that they participate in as they have done for generations. It is at one such gathering that the gentle people of Mt. Zion are introduced to their future leader, Rev. Elijah Craig.

Although the people are suspect of the preacher and he of them, their fates are sealed together after an unfortunate accident leads to a miracle that convinces everyone that “the reverend” was the right person to teach them the ways of god. For decades Craig lives, works and preaches among these people. They follow him even when they don’t understand his teachings. As the years go by, the community is faced with another tragedy that drastically shifts the direction that the community takes. It is during this period that the town gains media attention and the true motives of “the reverend” are brought to light.

This books is filled with twists and turns that compel you to continue reading even when you think that there’s nothing more that can happen. The most unfortunate thing about it is the lack of proofreading. At points I had to go back and reread areas in order to keep up with a tale that was already a bit complicated. There is a good story within the pages of this book but you do have to do some overlooking in order to get to it. The epilogue and final chapter were a bit confusing. I understand that they were meant to uncover the whole plot behind the actions that took place throughout the book but in this reviewers opinion there were other ways that this could be done that fit more into the flow of the storytelling that the rest of the book was told in. Overall this was a decently written story that has the potential to be much more. I rate the book 2 out of 4 stars.
