Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison is an Urban Fantasy novel. It is a tale of four friends, who by circumstance find themselves sneaking about within the hideout of an occult. The story starts with three of the four friends. It is the night before their SAT exams, and the four had agreed to spend it studying at Meat’s cabin.

Bill and Ron Slaughter are the first to arrive. While waiting for Katelyn to arrive, Ron and Meat suggest and play their instruments. Unable to read with all the noise, Bing closes his book and joins Ron and Meat. While playing, lightning strikes and the power goes out, plunging the room into darkness. The three light up candles.

Bing peers out a window at the storm, fascinated by it. Lightning strikes, illuminating movement in the back yard. It strikes again and Bill sees a person running across the lawn and coming toward the house. He calls the others and they all peer outside. Something slams hard against the window. Another lightning strike illuminates the man who had collided with the window, covering it with mud and blood.

I really enjoyed reading this book. For one thing, the plot was quite entertaining. It is a story full of adventure and mystery. The characters were also interesting, multifaceted as they were. Especially the Slaughter brothers. Sure, there were times I didn’t really like them, like every time they argued. This was largely because the reasons for their arguments were ridiculous. Bing would always blame Ron for a mistake made, but it really seemed like he was just covering up his own shortcomings.

I loved how deep their friendship was. Either one of the four would definitely stake his or her life for his or her friend’s sake. And they did do this. I was moved by their compassion and camaraderie. The book’s supernatural elements added to a richer and more enjoyable telling of the story. They also added to the book’s overall theme.

Sometimes the book was funny. The book’s ending was satisfying. It was also written in an easy and fun to read language. The book also seems to be well edited as I did not find any grammatical error.

All in all, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was a really fun read. I think this book would best entertain anyone who is interested in mystery stories.
