Review of E M P Honeymoon
E M P Honeymoon is a 16-chapter science fiction novel by Dorothy May Mercer. This book has themes of Good versus Evil, mystery, and slight romance.
In this book, newlywed couple Kelly and Tom Turbulo are on their honeymoon on a beautiful island in Honduras. While site seeing, computer science graduate, Kelly Turbulo, wanders around the island and stumbles on what she reckons could be the North American power grid in a lab, in a discreet part of a Pigsty book shop. This event triggered a series of investigations enlisting the help of CIA headquarters, Fairfax private investigators, the Senator’s office, and the United States national space force to solve the mystery of what this discovery is and why it is there. What starts as a peaceful honeymoon turns into a mission to save North America from possible terrorist attacks.
One of my favorite parts of E M P Honeymoon is how well the writer illustrates the difference in the power dynamics in relationships that are seen in the book between an employer and an employee. On one end, the audience sees the dictatorship relationship between General Lee and his boss, Dear Leader. This relationship is shown as one that does not have open lines of communication and the discipline and respect in the relationship is maintained by the fear that General Lee has of Dear Leader due to the authoritarian style of leadership that Dear Leader has. In contrast, the relationship between Cynthia Patterson and her boss, Senator Mike McBride is one where Cynthia seems comfortable enough to communicate openly with Senator McBride without fear of overt scrutiny or punishment due to that. They have mutual respect for one another without Senator McBride having to use fear tactics to maintain that respect.
I did not dislike any aspect of the book.
I also liked the synergy of the different characters that were working to overthrow the terrorist plan. It was well illustrated in the book how different individuals who, some, did not even have any relation to one another, such as Kim Jung-Lo, were all working well together to reach a common goal.
The book was well-written, and I did not pick up any grammatical errors. It has a good plot and, the journey to the plot is interesting enough to keep the reader hooked on the book. I rate E M P Honeymoon 4 out of 4 stars, and I would recommend it for readers who enjoy science fiction novels that have an element of mystery.
