Mara Bays is a detective who works for the LAPD. Shas covered many cases in her time, but never one that was so close to home. On the day of her anniversary with her girlfriend, Casey, someone broke into Casey’s home and physically attacked her near the point of death because of her sexuality. This hate crime leads Mara on the case to find out who could have done this to Casey. With help from her longtime partner on the force (Derek), Mara is set to take on whatever obstacles that could stand in her way of getting justice.

Janis Jones is the author of this amazing book – B-Side - that tells the story of this gay female relationship that has not been explored before. Casey is a 28-year-old, free spirit who’s comfortable with her sexuality. Then there’s Mara, who is forty and shies away from others knowing about her sexual preference. It was great to see how the author wrote two completely different characters who were able to fall in love with one another, despite their contrasts. I would highly recommend this book to mature audiences (due to the explicit language) and specifically to those of the LGBTQ+ community.

B-Side is told from the 3rd person point-of-view from Mara, Casey, Derek, a homeless man name Skeezy and other individuals who are involved in Casey’s case. The themes covered in this book are relevant to today’s society and it was something that stood out to me. The description of how bad a hate crime can occur to someone of the LGBTQ+ community is detailed with derogatory language that happens in real life. The in-depth description of Casey’s attack can be triggering, so I would not recommend this to individuals who will be offended by the words used.

There was nothing I disliked about B-Side. I do have so many things that I do love about the book that stood out to me. The surprising twist-and-turns throughout the story got me invested in figuring out who this intruder could be. I was satisfied with the ending and to watch the process of how Mara collects pieces of information that will eventually come together for this case was amazing.

I had such a great time reading this book. It was a quick read of 200 pages with short chapters. The flow of the storyline kept me intrigued at every turn and it makes you feel like you’re on the case with Mara and Derek. I only saw a couple of grammar errors in the entire book, but it did not take away anything from the overall story. I’m a huge fan of police/detective thriller and suspense books, so I knew that I was going to enjoy the journey the author was going to take me on. For all these reasons listed, I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars.
