Review: Amity by Micol Ostow

Post by Colbycomp22 »

I wanted to like the novel Amity by Micol Ostow more than I actually did. I found that the novel just wasn't all that engaging and interesting. I think it may be because I have seen many movies/documentaries about the Amityville house.

I found that throughout the book, at times it was hard to follow what was happening. I think that is because of how the author worded things to describe what was going on. I thought that the beginning of the book was kind of hard to get into and I wasn't sure how I was going to like read from two perspectives during two different times.

I thought that Gwen was a solid character and I seemed to want to get to the point where it talked about her throughout the story. I didn't find Connor a very relatable character and he tended to be very irritating. I found to be disgusted when reading his inner thoughts because he was just so cruel.

I also found that nothing really happened in the middle of the story. The events that DID happen were very small and amounted to barely anything. Also, these events happened and the characters didn't explore what happened or question why it happened, etc.

(Spoiler)One thing I really didn't like was that for some reason Gwen had some kind of superpower???? This was so random and I didn't feel like it fit into the story at all. Then I feel like it was used to end the story rather abruptly which felt very forced and like it was thrown together in the moment. (Spoiler)

Some things that I did like about the story was that it was based in the Amity house. I only wish that that storyline was used in a better and more effective way. I also liked Gwen as a character and how it tried to be creepy.

In all, Amity was an okay read that would be good if you had some time to spare. Although, don't expect anything great and magnificent.

I would also like to thank the publisher Egmont USA for letting me read and review this novel. (:
