Duplicity by Fin C Gary is a crime thriller that flips back and forth between the present and past. It follows the lives of Daniel, who was brainwashed, and his father Tom, who was a drunkard.

The book revolves around two main characters. One is Tom, who is a selfish man who resents his family for being the reason he is not happy, and he constantly tries to cheat and abuse alcohol. The other is Daniel, who is a mentally unstable young man who is living a life of hatred toward his father. A strained relationship between Daniel and his father grow due to drunkenness. Eventually, Daniel has had enough, and he moves out and meets Waqar, a Muslim man he is attracted to. Waqar convinces Daniel into committing to his mission and promises him a painless future.

At a young age, Daniel witnessed cruelty, and it is from then on that he begins to veer away from humanity. He loses his mother to cancer, then his father to alcoholism, and he spends the rest of his youth wandering off to drugs and alcohol. The book was about the question of whether humans are bad or good. For Daniel, it seemed that his mental state was not only affected by his environment, but also by his sexual orientation and self-perception. Tom had had a great life before his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

The novel delves into how a broken family can influence one's actions in life. There were a few positive aspects to this story, such as how Gray manages to make us feel empathy for Daniel even though we can’t help but despise him for what he does. The characters were very realistic and had plenty of flaws, but also good qualities. The contrast was also well-developed, and the real and raw scenes made them all the more relatable.

I liked everything about this book; this was a dark and beautiful story about a family struggling with issues of brainwashing. It tackles these topics in a way that is very relevant to society at large. The book is well-edited, I did not find any errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for all the reasons that I have mentioned above.

I recommend this book to people who love crime thriller books and adults because it contains vulgar language and has sex scenes. This novel has dark themes which may be unsuitable for young people.
