Review of Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders
Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders by Brian E. Forschner is a long-forgotten, heart-wrenching real story of girls from Dayton who encountered a human monster and succumbed to death. This book throws light on the lives of people in Dayton during the 1900s. The system, the police, investigating techniques, and the healthcare situation that led to the improper investigation resulting in the loss of the dear lives of the girls are also factually presented. The bitter part was accusing the families of the murders.
During the early 1900s, Dayton had become an unsafe place for girls. A man who brutally killed and then sexually assaulted girls was on the loose. Sexual assault was very uncommon in those days, making parents and girls terrorized. The mothers always worried when their girls didn't return home early in the evening, fearing the worst. This worst fear, unfortunately, struck on the girls of five families. The poor girls were killed first by strangulation and then raped. The strangulation led to the name Jack the Strangler.
Brian E. Forschner started researching when he found that his great-aunt had died at a very young age. Investigating his great-aunt, a victim of rape, led to the similar stories of four other girls. He has excellently presented the story of these five girls, who once lived a happy life and sadly perished. The last chapter speaks about a brave woman who narrowly escaped the rapist and confessed to her ordeal. The author has done a brilliant job in his research and collection of facts and brought justice to their stories.
The book is a tribute to the departed souls and their grieving families. There is nothing negative that I can mention about this book. It is a saddening thought that sexual assault has become very common these days. Even though the investigation techniques, security, and healthcare have improved, the situation is much worse than in the 1900s. There are thousands of human monsters lurking today in every part of the world, and women are always in danger.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is professionally edited and contains no significant mistakes. I recommend this book to officials in the system and journalists who work towards improving women's lives. I also recommend this book to all girls who want to be strong and give a tough fight in an undesirable situation.
