The storyline focuses on the mischievous daughter of a company called “The Brotherhood.” The main characters name is Veronica Austin (perhaps this is why I thought of the television series Veronica Mars, but perhaps this was intentional or subliminal) and she is the daughter of the president of one of the regions of the brotherhood. The Brotherhood seems to focus on researching on Deahman, which seem to be cousins or descendants of vampires. The story follows Veronicas search of her disappeared mother who, we as an audience get the sense, had been in lieu with the propagated-ly evil Deahman. Around every chapter Veronica is faced with a new sense of fear and a new challenge, figuring out exactly who and what she can trust and following leads that could lead ultimately to her demise. The story goes on and we find that there is way more to our dear heroines journey than just the search for her missing mother. Murder, tyranny, propaganda, and death all ensue in this tale.
What I valued most about this book was that it made a huge attempt at incorporating all kinds of vampire and demon stories. I feel that in our modern society with all kinds of books beyond Anne Rices “Interview with a Vampire” and Twilight there have been so many novels and books written about the supernatural. Maybe I had just missed the boat previously on the supernatural reading but more and more these days these kinds of books surface and sell. The point being I feel that a lot of influence went into this particular work and the novel was made better for it.
What I could have done without in this particular novel were the multiple sentence fragments, sentences not carefully read over or constructed and the way the electronic version translated. Some of the writing would start in one font and in the middle of the paragraph it would change font size and type. It was very distracting and strange. I feel that this book may have been through the editorial process but not enough to make it a clean copy without distraction. I would love to say that this did not detract from my enjoyment of the story but the little things can really take away from the whole picture.
All in all a great job from the author and I would recommend it to folks who are invested in the supernatural series in literature right now. Warning:there are some graphic/explicit/grotesque scenes in this novel and this is again not exactly as clean cut as Anne Rice’s or Stephanie Meyers work. I almost wonder if the author would do more justice to murder novels as a whole without the supernatural element. This particular book left me intrigued but not enough to go run out and by the next installment. If you enjoy murder mysteries, and a historical chase, with some vampires and demons peppered in, with a religious seeming sanction involved this book will definitely keep you up on a Friday night. Please enjoy the book if you choose to purchase it and let me know your thoughts afterward. Thank you for reading this review.
