Review of The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in the Inspector Sheehan murder mystery series. All the events in the book take place in Northern Ireland. I previously reviewed a book in the same series, so I am already acquainted with Inspector Sheehan and his team. For the uninitiated, Inspector Jim Sheehan works as the chief inspector for the Police Service of Northern Island, also known as PSNI. He and his capable team investigate serious crimes that occur in the city. In this book, Sheehan faces a significant challenge in apprehending a heinous individual who goes on a murdering spree, brutally offing the unlucky victims. Once again, the author, Brian O'Hare, has successfully managed to take his readers on a thrilling ride with his top-notch writing and ability to keep us on the edge of our seats.
The story begins with the accidental death of a young man who has been imprisoned for manslaughter. That incident serves as a foreshadowing of the horrifying events to come. A seemingly deranged but highly intelligent serial killer begins murdering people in the most gruesome manner. Worse, the individual appears to enjoy the killings, implying that he or she is a cold psychopath. Except for a blog on the dark web, the individual leaves no trace. The blog is written in Elizabethan prose in which the killer justifies the killings, followed by a play-by-play detail of the murders. Will Sheehan be able to catch the elusive killer with only a blog as evidence? Will he be able to discover the reason for these heinous killings? While on the hunt for the murderer, Sheehan discovers a secret sex club. The club engages in the most heinous and depraved sex acts, giving anyone with a conscience sleepless nights. Who owns this club, and is it linked to any of the murders? How far down the rabbit hole will this investigation take the chief inspector and his team?
O'Hare has woven a story that is both engaging and suspenseful. Throughout, I kept running scenarios and guessing who the real killer was. When I thought I had identified a possible murderer, the author would throw a curveball that made me reconsider. Another thing that piqued my interest was the in-depth explanation of the dark web. Thanks to the crime shows on TV, I was somewhat familiar with the dark web. However, the author provided a detailed explanation of how it works and how it is used by people with criminal tendencies to engage in activities that sent chills down my spine. Also, there are a lot of major and minor characters in the book, and it's impossible to remember them all. For the reader's convenience, the author has thoughtfully provided a list of all the characters and their descriptions right at the start. He has also added a glossary of Northern Ireland police terms and acronyms. Also, O'Hare's writing style is notable, as he manages to deliver an excellent crime thriller that checks all the boxes.
Sheehan is a skilled police officer who is highly intelligent, intuitive, and experienced. Based on this book, I believe he may have an eidetic memory as well. His teammates, with their diverse personalities and abilities, add value to the team. They are professionals who perform their duties with zeal and conduct thorough investigations into crimes. Aside from the PSNI personnel, I thought Dr. Richard Campbell, the medical pathologist, was another interesting character. He was also friends with Sheehan, and the two of them would frequently engage in a battle of wills. Also, the dialogues play an important role in bringing the characters and the story to life. There is only one punctuation error, so it has been well edited. The only thing that bothered me was that Sergeant Denise Stewart was the team's sole female member. I would have liked to see more female representation from the author. However, that observation has no bearing on the novel, and I would gladly give The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars.
Readers who enjoy suspense, murder mysteries, and crime thrillers will enjoy this book. I'd like to point out that the author has provided some explicit details about the murders and sexual depravities that occurred in the sex club. Please keep in mind that this may cause distress to some readers. There is also the use of non-borderline profanity. As a result, the book is not intended for children. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the previously stated genres and is not concerned about the aforementioned warnings.
