Review of Mystery in ulster county
Joe is a homicide detective whose job has continuously thwarted his efforts at keeping a romantic relationship. After several failed attempts, he is on a date with Nicole. The date is cut short when he receives a phone call informing him of another homicide. A serial killer is in town and has just murdered their third victim. Joe and Anthony La Fonte (Tone), his rookie partner, have to find a way to uncover who is responsible and stop the killings.
Meanwhile, Tone has had a difficult life, growing up without his parents. He lives a very secret life as a result. Joe tries to get him to loosen up but soon has a difficult time trusting him when Tone's characteristics are consistent with the killer's, according to the profiler. Is this case the end of the beginning for Joe's relationship with Nicole? Who could the killer be? What is the relationship between the victims? Find answers to the questions and more in this piece of fiction called Mystery In Ulster County by Richard Horvath.
One thing that I like about this novel is the suspense that the author maintains throughout the tale. I kept guessing who the killer was from the beginning to the end. I also like that the author employed the first-person narrative style, telling the story through Joe’s eyes and enhancing the suspense even further. I also found the conclusion of the 90-page publication unique and creative.
However, the events that led to the end of the story didn’t add up for me. I won’t be able to explain exactly what I mean without giving away spoilers, so I’ll leave readers to make their conclusions. Also, the text doesn’t seem professionally edited; I found more than ten errors. However, I was only able to report nine of them, as most of them were found in reported speeches. The character development was a bit underwhelming. For example, Nicole was just described as “the most beautiful girl you’d ever see,” and the conversations between the characters seemed too mechanical and forced. Also, several other characters that were introduced into the case played no role in the outcome of the case, which isn’t a great aspect of the book.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The first star was deducted because of the issues I had with the characterization and the end of the novel. The second point was deducted because of the poor editing. I didn’t rate the publication any less because I like the author’s creativity with the story, even if its execution can be improved. I recommend this book to readers that are interested in detective fiction books filled with mysteries. Gruesome scenes are described in the book, and profane words are present, so sensitive readers may want to steer clear.
