Adoptive Personality by Cassandra Scearce is a story of a girl who grows up in an abusive home, and then, one day, takes matters into her own hands. Eve, the protagonist, sets fire to her home and watches her father, who spent years raping her and selling her to pay off his debts, and her mother, who did nothing to stop him, begin to burn before she leaves and puts on an act of innocence. She ends up finding her way through the foster care system and the high school world, as well as the real world, by facing her scars from the past and using her looks to get whatever she wanted.

At one point in the story, Eve finds out that the people who raised her were not her birth parents; that she had been adopted into that awful home. She finds the name of the birth mother, tracks her down, and plots a way to get close to her and get revenge.

This story was interesting enough, with the set up of the plot making the reader want to learn more and see what was going to happen. The only problem was that in some places, the pace was too slow (with a lot of description where it really didn’t need to be) and in others, it was too fast (with a quick sentence or two skipping over a large chunk of time or an event that could very well have been played out and remained interesting).

This book is quite graphic, something that is warned within the first few pages before the story begins (a warning I greatly appreciated). While the graphic content was an integral part of the storyline, there were some parts, especially toward the end of the book, where the storyline almost got lost amongst too many graphic scenes with not enough other content to keep the story moving through them.

Unfortunately, this book contained a lot of errors, especially with comma usage; commas where there shouldn’t be any, as well as missing commas. There were also a few misused words (such as “taunt” instead of “taut”, and done enough times so as not to be typographical errors), and the conversations were not formatted properly, making it incredibly difficult to keep track of who was talking to whom.

All in all, I think the story kept my attention, but the technical errors and the way the plot got lost toward the end were negative points. I was also a bit disappointed in the way the big plot twist ending was revealed; it didn’t have the right setup or anything afterward to really integrate it and make it a fantastic plot twist finish.

I give this book 2 out of 4 stars. I think that those who enjoy erotic novels and can easily overlook difficult-to-follow conversations, technical writing errors, and a plot that doesn’t keep pace well, will enjoy the novel. However, those looking for something a little more put-together may not be able to make it through the entire story.
