Sometimes the past can come back to haunt you. The people in the Indian village where this story occurs are a very close knit community and always look out for each other with deep rooted faith and love. Children are true gifts from God and are treated as such, and the more the merrier. Everyone has a place, with the men as providers and the women who gladly take care of their husbands in reverence and their children with a fierce mother’s love. Little do they know that one among them is on a mission of destruction and revenge. Evil has come to their little village because of something their fathers and grandfathers did many years ago.

Trouble begins with the newest member of the community and then strange and gruesome things begin to happen to the children. At first these incidents appear to be unfortunate accidents, but then one of the children is found dead. Shortly after that a pregnant woman walks out of a window to her death. Both are ruled as suicides but close family and friends know better and recount that both the child and the woman experienced some unexplainably strange things before their demise. It seems that dark shadows, dreams, and comatose sleep are beginning to plague more and more people and the evil seems to be suffocating the life out of the village. The villagers begin to distrust each other because it is so much easier to blame someone that you can see rather than an evil that you cannot.

Life in the village changes drastically as more strange and horrendous events unfold. Mothers keep their children home from school and the men do all that they know how to do to protect their families. The police and village council cannot help, so the families do the only thing that they know to do, which is to bind together and pray because they know in their hearts that God will not fail them and that good overcomes evil every single time. It is around this time that voices and laughter begin to ring out from the woods, so everyone agrees that the time to do something is now or their peace and sanity will be snatched from them forever.

Follow along with the faithful as they join together in what turns out to be a fight for their lives and the souls of their children. Just when it seems that they can endure and fight no longer help arrives from two villages away in the form of a wise old man experienced in fighting evil. Before the fight is over, it takes the strength of the entire village, plus help from neighboring villagers to fight what they now know is a powerful witch with revenge on her agenda. She cannot be conquered with physical weapons alone, but it will take the strength of God, unity, and the goodness deep with their hearts. Can they gain victory without losing the life of anyone else?

I enjoyed this book. After I really got into it I did not want to put it down! The author created an old world feeling within the village but threw in modern terminology that referred to cities and telephones to let readers know that this was not some medieval time event but something that can happen in the world as we know it now. I also saw the faith and courage of the villagers as a great source of inspiration during times of adversity. There are quite a few errors that some good editing will correct, but my overall reading experience was not overly affected. I give this “a three out of four”, because of the errors but I do highly recommend it, especially if your interests include reading about good vs. evil.
