Review of Legacy of Blood
A serial killer is at large at Hope Harbor. The primary victim is unwilling to reveal much, leaving many questions unanswered on the identity of the serial murderer and the reason for the murders. Adrianna Martinelli is a terrible liar. Zoey is exasperated after a short time listening to her half-truths. Who or what is she trying to hide? Could Zoey be bringing herself close to the door of death? The investigation team has to race against time to stop further killings, identify the killer and the motive behind the murders in Legacy of Blood: A Zoey Callaway Mystery by Debi Chestnut.
A liar meets a determined problem solver who gets to the root of every matter at hand, regardless of the prevailing circumstances. It is simply a race against time and determination to press on despite several obstacles, both intrinsic and extrinsic. There is so much suspense to keep one turning the book pages to find answers, yet with one solution arises more questions. The fact that all questions are answered eventually in unforeseen ways, often, is captivating.
What I liked most about the book is that there was no linear motion towards a climax and then the anticlimax afterward. Instead, the plot seems more of a bumpy ride through a series of hills and valleys. There are countless adrenaline-rush moments. The sub-plots add to the thrilling nature of the book. It was amusing to pick character after character as suspects and discard them shortly when proved wrong. The guessing game went on down to the concluding chapter because there were numerous scenes where it appeared the murderer was close.
Against the backdrop of the main story, other themes such as chauvinism are explored. However, every scheme eventually was a part of a perfectly crafted piece of the major puzzle. Zoey, at one time, fails to put together two connections, though. It was unlike her character, and I do not know if this was to make her more relatable or not. The result was the opposite, though; this flaw became unbelievable. While some connections appeared forced, the ending threw me off my balance, as I did not see it coming.
Owing to the number of errors I encountered while reading, I rate the book three out of four stars. I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and crime thrillers. For dog and cat lovers, Atlas and Karma will amaze you. There are cuss words and gory scenes in the book, making it unsuitable for anyone averse to them.
