Review of Demon Freaks
DEMON FREAKS, written by J.R.R.R. (Jim) HARDISON, is a horror story that is brilliantly mixed with comedy. Bing and Ron Slaughter are identical twins, who are about to finish high school. They are constantly bullied by their history teacher, Mr. Brom. They have academic problems in school and have to do very well in the Scholastic Aptitude Test. They need to do well in this test in order to get admitted into a good college. If they fail the test, then they might have to work at McDonald's, just like their parents.
Bing and Ron are members of a musical band called the Ephits. They convince other members of the band, who are their friends, to study overnight with them in preparation for the test. The friends are Prathamesh "Meat" Kimitri and Kaitlyn Krimpsen. They converge at Meat's cabin in the woods to study and engage in a bit of rehearsal. However, things do not go as planned. A great thunderstorm occurs and cuts the cabin off from electricity. They are assaulted by Mr. Brom, who wields a dagger that can control any person that has been stabbed with it. The dagger takes control of Meat. They have to save themselves, their friend, and the world from the Golfers Association who want to summon a wicked demon.
I love this story because there are a plethora of plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what next is going to happen. The characterization in this novel is impressive. The characters are realistic, believable, and relatable. The protagonists are teenagers, and Hardison presents their thoughts, actions, and dialogues appropriately. The protagonists experience the typical challenges that a normal teenager goes through, such as admission into a good college. As well, the constant change of the name of their band shows the age of the protagonists.
This book is professionally edited; I found only a few errors in it. The pace of this novel is fast; the whole story occurs in one day. The fast pace is good as the reader does not get bored. This is the first book by Hardison that I have read; I will be looking out for his works because he knows how to keep a reader engaged and entertained.
Even though the fast pace of this book discourages boredom, I think the pace is too fast. The reader is not given the opportunity to really appreciate the characters and develop an emotional bond with them. However, this negative feature did not spoil my enjoyment of this book; hence, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this work to young adults that love horror stories.
