Review of Shadow Wolves
It sure didn’t take long for this story to catch me in its web. Shadow Wolves is an interesting story of those men and women organized to form a group to stop many types of crime...human traffickers, terrorists, drug dealers, and many other groups bringing terror and crime into our country. As you have seen in the news, none of these groups are easy to find and charge. That’s where the Shadow Wolves come into play. They are a group of Native American men and women who track and enforce the law against these offenders.
There is a lot of tense suspense here and a lot of action. Kaminski writes action scenes well. Often an author can make this type of action very confusing. Here Kaminski seems to create action you can see. His vision and description help the moment in time become our moment. It’s almost as if you are watching a movie. But this book isn’t just full of action, it has some heart-wrenching moments that you can imagine would exist in any story of this type. So many people get caught up in all of this, the victims as well as the silent heroes trying to stop the atrocious acts. It is occasionally difficult to know who to feel the most for. There is a lot of hurt and sorrow in this book but there is a lot of accomplishment too. The “bad guys” don’t win every war.
One of the things that struck me most in this book was having to look back and remember I was reading a fiction novel. I am sure not everything reported is accurate, this is after all fiction which affords the author a certain amount of literary license. Yet often the story had me wondering how accurate the events and occurrences were. Many times it had me hoping such a thing had never occurred. It had me running to my computer to learn more about the history and often it was accurate. One of those great books that you read as a fiction book and yet glean a few new facts. I love books that tweak my interest a little to research and learn something and yet as a piece of fiction keep me right on the edge of my seat, turning pages as fast as I can to see what will happen.
It appears as if this is a debut novel for Jake Kaminski. It is definitely a 4 out of 4 stars debut. He needs to keep on writing more!
