Review of A Season of Sons
Reverend Lawrence Livingston was eviscerated while praying in church late at night. A black pearl was found in his hand. Leon Safullo, a forensic psychiatrist and criminal analyst, was called in to help discover the murderer. After being on the case for a day, he went home to find that his wife had been delivered a black pearl. Leon realizes the murderer possesses confidential information about him that he shouldn’t have access to, and his family may be in danger. Someone caling himself Antonio Guzman contacts him, saying he is part of a group made up of dark energy—dark spirits. He informs Leon that a man named Paul Evans is in danger from them. Leon has a hard time being convinced there is anything supernatural going on and thinks Guzman has severe psychiatric problems.
Paul Evans had made a pact with Guzman many years previously in the pursuit of wealth. He doesn’t know if this evil man is a figment of his imagination or if he truly exists. Guzman thinks it is time for Paul to pay for his success—his son, Matt, must die. Matt is more resistant to the effects of the dark energy than most people because he has something called a “Perfect Light.” Paul, in a desperate attempt to save his son, flees with him to Great Falls, Montana, in the face of a horrible winter storm. There, they also have to combat the forces of evil.
A Season of Sons: Black Spiral Book 1 by Rob Tucker is a crime drama/thriller with incorporated supernatural components. This is the first in a series of four books; however, it can be read as a standalone novel with most of the questions answered by the end of the story. The tale captures the reader’s attention in the prologue, with the reverend being killed, and keeps them spellbound throughout the novel. The highly descriptive narrative keeps one immersed in the story with multiple twists and turns. In fact, the depictions were so vivid that I had to get a blanket because of feeling cold during the snowstorm. Multiple well-developed threads, with believable and diverse characters, are woven together to create a captivating and unpredictable story that is difficult to put down.
The importance of family and friends represents an underlying theme in the story, including supporting and being there for each other. Paul had turned his back on his family earlier and is now paying the price. He is estranged from his children, and his wife is in a mental institution. Paul wanted Matt to be more like him, and minor things, like wearing an earring, caused major arguments between them. He now realizes he was wrong and wishes he could change things.
Leon believes that too many people put faith in the information they receive on social media. Instead of thinking for themselves or researching the truth, they tend to believe and go along with the crowd. I think this has the ring of truth, and unfortunately, we perceive evidence of this more and more in today’s world.
As much as I would like to award A Season of Sons: Black Spiral Book 1 the full rating, it isn’t possible because of too many errors. Hopefully, the author will give the book one additional round of editing, so it can reach its full potential. Because that was the only thing I didn’t thoroughly enjoy, this mesmerizing tale achieves a rating of three out of four stars. It is thoroughly recommended to readers who enjoy crime dramas and thrillers with paranormal components. Profanity, violence, and some sex are encountered in the novel. If this is a problem for the reader, they might consider looking elsewhere.

This is the first book in the series, and I haven't read any of the others. I don't think they are out yet. However, this book can be read as a standalone. It definitely doesn't end on a cliffhanger. Most of the questions are answered by the ending. I don't know if Paul is in any of the others or not. I doubt it. I don't think you would regret reading the novel.
