“The Sixteen Kalas of Silence: Book Three of the Adventures, Romance and Enlightenment of Clay St. Claire and Nancy Picarro” by John Viviano. “The Sixteen Kalas” is an action and adventure fiction novel.

Sphinx, Wilho, Tovio and Furio work to destroy the property of a coalmine and then to destroy a damn. Who are these crazy people? The story immediately draws you in with excitement. This action adventure explores deeper themes as well. The author delves into spirituality, self-discovery, romance, and political agendas.

This is the third book in a series but can be read as a stand-alone novel. The author explains the characters backgrounds well enough that if you did not read the other books preceding this one you can still comfortably follow the story. The main protagonists in the story are Nancy and Clay. They are a couple that has been engaged for the past year. Nancy is struggling with things that most people struggle with at some part in their lives: that she isn’t exactly sure what she wants in life. Clay is on a path to self-fulfillment and wants Nancy at his side but finds that he doesn’t understand her. He, like many men, believes that she expects him to read her mind and he cannot do that. Together they go on a spiritual and romantically deepening journey.

Dick Colfax is a billionaire who wants to become a trillionaire in the coal mining industry. He comes up with a plot to corner the world’s coal mining industry. Guy Charlevois and Magda Helmer join with him to bring the U.S. government into the scam. Guy Charlevois is an ex-preacher becomes wealthy politician. Magda Helmer is an ex-rock stare become Texas Senator. Guy is going to run for President with Magda as his vice. They all plan to work together to get a hold on the world’s coal market because the market in Montana just isn’t big enough.

Nancy and Clay discover the plot to corner the world’s coal reserve. Clay’s experience as an Army Ranger and extremely intelligent professor help him to gain the job to investigate what is going on in Malawi. How will this international coal investigation end? The answer takes you on a fun ride with Clay and Nancy around the world.
The couple deepens their mental, emotional and spiritual minds on their international expedition. Their spiritual journey consists of deepening in Eastern philosophy such as Yoga Asanas. The author discusses an interesting concept of enlightenment called “Kalas” as mentioned in the title of the book. Kalas are a scientific scale of measurement used to measure how spiritually involved a person is at a set point in time. It was refreshing to read a novel that incorporated spiritual growth and well-being as a part of life’s journey.

I enjoyed this book and give it a “3 out of 4 stars” . I recommend others to read it. The only thing I disliked about the book due to personal preferences is the political agenda in the book. I tend to shy away from anything political but all of the other themes in the book made up for the parts I did not like. I also thought the little pictures added throughout the book were a nice touch.

Excellent review. I'd put this on my "going to read" shelf if it were available from my public library.
