Set between Germany and the United States, Nein follows a web of events that spiral off a fatal assassination attempt. Annie Steele is in Berlin visiting her uncle when she learns he is in critical condition after an unknown shooter guns down a cafe. Elsewhere in Berlin, Horst Warburg makes a startling deathbed confession involving the second world war and a supposed hidden stash of Nazi treasure. Soon, Annie Steele's search for the assassin coincides with a frantic hunt for the lost gold, leading her directly into the path of many dangerous personalities fighting for the control of power.

Charles Alexander's Nein is an exciting and unpredictable thriller that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish.  Though this book has many merits to it, Alexander shone in the aspect of character design. From plotting lively and unique characters to his manner of describing them, the author seemed to thrive in the sheer amount of different personalities that played a role in this story.

As a whole, this book had an almost abrasive vibe to it. Most of the characters were hardened to a degree, and how they saw the world was not the rosiest. This facet, combined with the plot of the book, contributes to a work that is very much unsuitable for younger readers.

The editing is where the ball was truly dropped, as this book does contain more than a comfortable amount of errors. Though these are far between, they are often very obvious and distracting, begging the question as to how they managed to be overlooked in the first place. The reader can easily surmise that the editing was not done professionally and I would recommend another round of thorough proofreading.

The only other minor issue I have with this book would be the somewhat overwhelming volume of information that the reader has to contend with very quickly. With the narrative alternating between several different points of view, the back and forth gets a little dizzying — thankfully, these stories remain entertaining even while fragmented, and eventually merge into one.

My rating of this book is 3 out of 4 stars with one point deducted due to the poor editing. I recommend Nein to readers who enjoy thrillers and action. Though it is the fourth instalment in a series, this book works perfectly well as a standalone with very few references to the previous books.

Reader discretion is advised. This book features themes of war and violence as well as numerous sexual references.

Enjoy.

I like a good thriller and this sounds like one. I think that I can ignore the errors for a the sake of a good book. I am sorry for Annie’s loss and hope she finds what she’s looking for.

I suppose I'm already thrilled after reading your review. I can't wait to reveal what happens next. However, I agree that bad editing may cause one's reading cycle to be disrupted. Loved reading your review, thanks for the same.^^

This seems like a fast paced thriller novel. Although it's not the kind of genre I'm looking for that the moment, I might recommend this book to my friends. But great job on the review. It's comprehensive and honest.
