Review of Annihilation
To say this book is an exciting novel would be an understatement. The plot of this book is like no other. It is unique and suspenseful. While reading it, I had to deal with a plethora of emotions, ranging from cringe to excitement, pure anger, anxiety, and happiness. I am sure many of you are wondering how I could say a plot was splendid when it made me cringe and angry sometimes. Well, there's a short and a long answer to that question. Short answer: Kaylin McFarren is a genius. Long answer: It is impossible not to cringe when you consider some of the protagonist's experiences. However, this cringe and anger only add more suspense to the plot. It makes you wonder how the story will play out.
Samara Daemonium is the protagonist in Kaylin's book, Annihilation. This is the second book in a series. At the time of this writing, the third book in the series had not yet been published. If you are interested in knowing when the sequel gets published, you can check the discussion page; I will post the news of its publication there.
Samara is a demon with an angel for a mother. Her birth mother is Ariel, and her father is Crighton. Against all odds, this couple is brought together as soul mates. This was made possible through the death of Samara's real mother, Lilith, and the occupation of her body by the soul of the angel in Lucifer's captivity. After taking over Lilith's body, Ariel became Samara's birth mother because the body she took over was with a child. Samara is a strong lady and a natural archer. In this book, she is made to face challenging situations that could break anyone. Samara and her family lived in Middle Earth.
In Hell, Lucinda, the daughter of Lucifer, assumed control following her father's demise. Despite having helped Crighton and his soulmate escape from Lucifer, she is now a different person, as her position as a ruler has changed her, and she would not mind using Crighton and his family as pawns in the war she's plotting against heaven. One of the reasons for this is her jealousy towards Crighton's soulmate because she wanted him for herself.
This summary is a very short glimpse into the story. The story goes much more in-depth and touches on several more plotlines. It is captivating, to say the least. This book features demons, angels, cambions (the name for hybrids, according to the book), and a few humans. It also features politics, obsession, love, ego, torture, explicit sex, and BDSM. The sex scenes are very detailed; the author did not hold back at all.
I like how this book has so much suspense. The plot shifts in ways that make it simply impossible to guess what will happen next. Kaylin McFarren's book was worth my time, and I am sure it will be worth your money. The protagonist is very lovable, and that will keep the readers riveted to their seats in hopes of seeing where the plot takes her. Fair warning, a dangerous path lay ahead and, perhaps, some calm-waters moments too. The question is, will she come out of this physically and psychologically intact?
Even though the plot twists contained in this book are one of its strong suits, there were some cases where I thought it went too far. There were instances where it was just too much, and it felt like the author was intentionally trying to confuse the readers. This wasn't very pleasant.
Nonetheless, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The plot deserves it. Despite the frustrating and cringe-worthy moments I encountered, I still found the book thoroughly interesting. I recommend this to lovers of suspense, romance, and fiction, from age 16 upwards. I don't think an audience younger than that age range would understand the plot, and I also don't think they should be exposed to that level of explicit sexual content.
