Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Hattie is an amnesic old lady who is in a funeral hall, jammed with unfamiliar faces. M. Rebecca Wildsmith's book Hattie Vavaseur is the story of a woman trying to recover her forgotten life. She could only remember her caretakers and a few others, who were constantly there for her. But the ones that left, were washed off from her memory lane. She was halted at a mysterious hotel after the funeral, with a master whose expressions, emotions and demeanor are as haunting as the color pink to Hattie. Thus, begins her pick and throw of recollections and realisations. With every discovery of truth, Hattie meets new questions. Her curiosity to know more, only leads to the revelation of a hurtful past. And somehow her past is still existing in her present, unacknowledged. To know where Hattie is and what she has done to be in this position, you will have to read the book.
This book is a package of mysterious anticipations, unfathomable and unscientific twists, realistic characters and soft romance. I loved how Hattie's character was designed. She was old, weak and clueless, yet she managed to maintain an upper hand in all anxiety-provoking situations. The book has a wonderful plot line. You will actually see nothing coming. The mini stories involved in this book just steal your heart. I also commend the writer's attempt to put the right words to use. Even the most mystical and supernatural elements were described lucidly. I absolutely loved the idea behind this plot, which I can not reveal as it is a spoiler. The book is also perfectly edited. All in all, I'd say that this book has given birth to a very thrilling idea of life in my head.
Even with such an amazing story, there was one particular thing that disinterested me. In the initial chapters, the story was very unclear. The author must have wanted to make the readers feel what had Hattie felt, but to me, it was quite annoying. It felt as if you were made to wear blurry glasses. You want to see what's ahead, but it's ambiguous.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for a mind-blowing plot, extremely well-built characters and the concept behind the mysterious house Hattie has to stay at. I understand that the beginning was vague, but it didn't drive me away from the story. It made me more curious and helped me cling to the book.
Literary geeks will enjoy this book for building up an abode that no one had ever thought of. This book has a mixed genre of mystery, thriller, mild romance, supernatural drama and finally criminality. I recommend the audience to be age 14 and upwards, for the book has supernatural elements that the younger audience would find difficult to fathom. This book shook my imagination, and I hope it thrills yours as well.
