Review of Demon Freaks
On the night before their SAT test, twin brothers Bing and Ron Slaughter, as well as their friends Kaitlyn and Prathamesh, find themselves in a bizarre but life threatening muddle. It all begins in a rather remote cabin where the Slaughter brothers and Prathamesh are pursued by the Servants of Darkness. Because of a dagger that belongs to the Servants of Darkness, Prathamesh loses his self control and zooms off. When Kaitlyn finally arrives, she accompanies the Slaughter brothers in their determined attempt to save Prathamesh. Alas, when they get there, they find Prathamesh held hostage, and Kaitlyn gets seized as well. Now it's up to Bing and Ron to save their friends, not only because they desperately need to prepare for their upcoming test, but also in a few hours time, their friends will be ritually sacrificed!
Written by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison, Demon Freaks is a horror fiction book that narrates how the Slaughter brothers go to great lengths to save their friends' lives. On a stormy night when time is more precious than ever, Bing and Ron risk many things - including their lives - in order to save them. They have a very slim chance of succeeding, especially because they are only boys against people familiar with the realms of darkness. Will they survive? Will they manage to save their friends? And even if they do, will they pass their SAT test now that they have failed to prepare for it?
I had a great time reading this book. It was thrilling and humorous at the same time. The overall plot is cohesive and integrated in a way that makes it easy to believe that the events actually happened. The story has amazing descriptions and narratives of how events occurred and the experiences of the characters. I liked how easy it was to keep track of each character and clearly identify them by their own names and personal description. I also liked how the small details and hints at the beginning of the story are significant towards the end.
I have not found anything I dislike about this book, although I was not entirely satisfied with the development and description of Groomgerock. I would have loved to fully know his story, as well as have a fuller description of the intricate engravings on him.
I see no reason why this book should have a star deducted. The narrative is wonderful and pleasant to read, it even appeals to my emotions. It was well written with an excellent vocabulary. Furthermore, not only was the book well edited, but also void of both grammatical and punctuation errors. I would therefore like to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the job well done.
Seeing that this book has a nice blend of horror and comedy, I would recommend this book to young adults who are new to horror narratives. This book is a great way for them to start their exploration of the horror genre. Readers that find spiritual things like demons and rituals will also find this book amazing.
