After many years, Jonny’s nightmares resurface. He finds himself reliving the same nightmare every time he falls asleep. Coincidentally, his sister’s friend, Cheyenne, comes to his garage, and he sees strange lights that cause him to strongly resent her. To make matters more exhilarating, he has to protect the person he firmly believes is the cause of his misfortunes. Equally, Jonny has to keep his son Jacob bathed in the light every time, as he battles demons from his past. What does this mean? What lurks in the darkness? Disturbance In The Darkness: A Fated Encounter by Ardnas Marie is a thrilling tale about good versus evil, kindness versus selfishness. It is in the genre of horror suspense.

The book begins with a scary dream, which seems independent of Jonny’s life. It appeared that there was a clear boundary between the present and the spine-chilling past at the start. Consequently, a dichotomy existed between reality and the dreams and visions experienced by different characters. However, as the story progresses, every piece of the puzzle begins to fall into its place. The apparent dichotomy slowly melted, unraveling an extraordinary tale. The characters had to face mysterious events that even those closest to them could not believe.

The characters are fascinating; Jonny is haunted by his past and has to protect his family at all costs. He has to reveal his past to Cheyenne, whom he dislikes so much. They have to work out their differences and work together in a daunting race to save Jonny’s family, whose safety is tied to that of Cheyenne. Additionally, others like his grandmother Adélaïde leave you wondering whether they are good or bad. She was so protective of her family that she was forced to go against Jonny’s wishes. Could they be working towards the same goal using different means? You will have to read the book to discover the irony.

One aspect that I enjoyed is that the author lets the reader experience the raw emotions accompanying every event. Some conversations threaten to bring to light the hidden, prompting characters to avoid them. Eventually, I saw the bigger picture and understood why traveling down memory lane was painful. Disturbance In The Darkness: A Fated Encounter is not solely about scary and mysterious occurrences, though. The rare joyous occasions, like a game of chess, shine brighter, as they are more than just brief moments between battles in the ongoing war. They create happy memories that are appreciated more, knowing they are transitory; no one can tell what will happen next.

Owing to the errors I encountered, I give the book a three out of four stars rating. I disliked nothing about it and cannot wait to read the sequel to see how things turn out eventually. Ardent readers of horror books will enjoy reading this book, especially those aged sixteen and above, as it comprises gory scenes and swearwords.

I despise horror fiction but this doesn't say that another should do the same. Thanks for the review.

I'm not much of a dreamer. I seldom remember the things I dream about. So, I may not relate to Johnny's story.
