Review of E M P Honeymoon
Police Sergeant Tom Turbulo and former Miss Kelly McBride are honeymooners on an island off the northeastern coast of Honduras. While window shopping, Kelly strolls into La Pocilga, a nondescript toy gift shop, and stumbles upon evidence suggesting that some terrorists have taken residence on the island. An ominous assailant attempts to prevent her from leaving the shop alive, but she manages to escape.
The couple make several phone calls and are soon joined by Senator McBride’s security detail and a CIA agent. A few days later, the new Space Force and the entire United States' national security machinery are on the trail of a group of foreign terrorists assigned to launch an EMP-capable nuclear warhead into US airspace. But then Uncle Sam realises, too late, that a duplicate warhead is already in orbit over North American airspace. Will the United States survive such a catastrophic threat from this enemy in the shadows?
EMP HONEYMOON: Kelly and Tom, written by Dorothy May Mercer, is a science fiction work that reveals some of the intrigues of global politics concerning nuclear power proliferation. It further demonstrates the outcome of the misuse of nuclear power capability by bad leadership. The plot is primarily set in North and Central America, with occasional references to unspecified locations in the Far East. Although the book reflects the author's personal views, it serves as a foundation for further reflection on the issues raised.
I was blown away by the author's ability to create such an engaging storyline with such a small cast of characters. Reading the book was a pleasure because of the seamless introduction of the characters. The pace of the storyline was both stimulating and emotional, which made my reading experience an unforgettable one.
My favorite character was Dear Leader's Chief Scientist, Jung Lo. The way the plot crafted Mr. Jung's cunning mind at every moment until his escape from the Korean facility was very amusing. I felt so connected to the character that his fears became my suspense until his safe return to his farm. I was even more overjoyed when I arrived at the page where his sabotage of DL and Commander Lee's plans paid off.
I wish the author had provided more technical background on the various technologies used in the plot. For instance, very little technical detail was provided on how nuclear technology is related to solar flaring. As a result, there is a knowledge gap regarding how both concepts interact with an EMP-capable warhead. I also believe that, for a professor of nuclear physics, Dr. Kinney's response on national television was at best superficial. That should have been an opportunity for the author to get deeply technical without detracting from the story’s flow.
I found no grammatical or typographical errors in the book. I did not come across any profanity while reading the book either. Despite the flaw I mentioned earlier, I give the book 4 out of 4 stars. It deserved a half-star less, but anything less than three and a half stars is insufficient, as I was thoroughly entertained. I recommend it to lovers of science fiction as well as readers of other genres who want to have a good time while reading.
