Demon freaks by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison, is the second novel written by the author. The cover perfectly depicts the key elements in the book, it is an action-packed supernatural adventure involving cloaked figures, demons, a golf course and a powerful psychic dagger.

The narrative is mostly told in the view of four buddies that are in a band called Epith (Bing and Ron (the twins), Prathamesh “Meat” Kimitri (drummer) and Kaitlyn Krimpsen (keyboard) and is told in the third person. In the course of the book, the author does switch characters, but the change is indicated by a new chapter with four stars (allows you to know who is speaking), therefore understanding and reading the book is made easy as you are kept up to date with the changes.

Ron and Bing Slaughter are on the verge of expulsion, so they must concentrate on studying for the upcoming SAT. What begins as normal band practice and studying takes a quick and sinister turn. While studying in a remote cabin in the woods isn't a great idea, they proceed with the not so smart plan. An unexpected storm arrives, the power goes out, officially starting off their crazy journey to save themselves and the world.

Their history instructor (Mr Brom) who is a member of the Servants of Darkness (SOD) discovers them at the cabin and attempts to murder them with a silver dagger (blade with mind-controlling properties). During an altercation the dagger is dropped, after picking up the dagger, Meat is possessed, and the other characters are following him to the dreadful Golfers Association headquarters. Studying for their upcoming SAT is all but forgotten as they must now battle against the Golfers' Association, which has a legion of crazy members who want to sacrifice them in order to summon a demon. We go on a crazily fantastic ride of awesome and hair-raising filled incidents that all unfold in less than a day!

While some readers may be put off by the hurried pace and lack of character development, many aspects in the book overpower these faults. The authors descriptive words really paint a picture of the characters surroundings, how they feel in a specific situation and how the monsters look. I laughed and smiled many times throughout the book, the plot was so intriguing that it kept my attention from start to finish. This is a book that will keep you turning the pages.

I would give the book a 4 out of 4 stars, I truly enjoyed the book, though there were unsolved problems at the end of the book, however this did not take away from the story, the ending was enough for me. Some individuals might find it offensive that “Jesus Christ” is exclaimed a lot, as it is one of the characters favourite expressions, I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy fast-paced, horror filled yet still humorous, action-oriented books.
