Review of Demon Freaks
Identical twin brothers Bing Slaughter and Ron Slaughter are high school juniors. They have a band that includes Meat, the drummer, and Kaitlyn, the keyboardist. With the SAT exams coming up, the brothers are tense as they must get good grades for admission into a decent school. The night before the exam, the brothers decide to study at Meat's summer cabin after band practice. However, things go awry one after the other. A storm erupts, resulting in a blackout. As if that wasn't enough, their history teacher Brom, dressed in a dark robe, bursts into the cabin and tries to stab them with a blade while uttering weird incantations. On top of that, Meat and Kaitlyn get embroiled in a demon summoning ritual. Can the brothers save their friends?
What was supposed to be a normal night turns into a terrifying ride in this supernatural comedy. Written in the third-person perspective, Demon Freaks is a story about friendship. J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison makes this work because he delivers the story with a sense of humor and above-average characters and dialogue.
Demon Freaks makes the most of the absurdity of the premise. The writing is amusing throughout and full of witty banter between the characters. It's unpredictable, which adds to the madness. The outcome is a quirky comedy with appealing characters who make reasonable decisions in frightening situations.
The individual personalities of the twins are portrayed so well that the reader can tell them apart. Characters are not flat and evolve over time. From being scared out of his mind to summoning his strength and fighting with the supernatural elements to save his friends, Bing slaughter showed great character development. Meat's character has personality development as well, and it's fun to watch him grow more confident in himself. The setting with the villain dressed as Santa Claus was sheer hilarity. Apart from the humor, I also found some meaningful phrases that appear in the book to be quite appealing.
There are still small flaws here and there. The origin of creatures known as teethheads is never explained by the author in the novel. There is also no explanation of the difference between the characters of golfers and servants of darkness. In its funny places, the book is entertaining. The final act, however, devolves into absurd horror. For me, this was the portion that felt dry and dragging.
The entertainment value of the book prompts me to overlook the negative points that I have mentioned. Furthermore, I didn't come across a single grammatical error. Therefore, I give Demon Freaks 4 out of 4 stars.
Demon Freaks is a good choice for young adult readers who enjoy books with fast-paced action and humorous plot twists.
