Being charged with a crime, especially homicide, is no easy matter. Dan Harris is a writer that after his son died and left his marriage about to end, lost in the torment of sorrow and guilt, he escapes to the Bahamas to write his next book. During a trip looking for information for his book with the town’s librarian, he comes across a body. Since the local police officer is anything but useful—he only flirts with the city librarian, Cat—Dan seeks proof of his innocence.

Without knowing anyone in the town and the people being wary of him. With Cat's help—while he fights the feelings for her and his wife—Will he make it before he loses everything? In a fight against time, in Guilt: A Novel by David Black, you will be engaged with this story from beginning to end.

One of the best things about this book is the writing and the marvelous phrases throughout; the narrative was also “on point” as I had no trouble imagining the scenes. David Black accomplished a great mix between the plot and the mystery that kept me reading the whole time, and it awoke my curiosity from the first line. Besides, throughout the book, you are able to sympathize with the characters and their stories. The author keeps adding more information from their past—the character's past—as the book progresses, and that helps you understand and change your emotions towards them. Furthermore, the narrative moves at a good, steady pace that picks up as the chapters progress.

One of the many positive aspects that I found is how the author divides the Points Of View (POV) according to the chapters. How he uses the flashbacks to add suspense and glimpses of the root of the crime and the character’s past.

As I was choosing a book to review, this one stood out from every book I could choose, amongst every crime, thriller, mystery, and horror genre. As you can realize, I had very high expectations for this novel, and it exceeded every single one of them. I don't have anything to complain about, and I will surely read it again.

There's nothing I disliked about this book, and besides that, it’s exceptionally well edited. I couldn't find any errors. Guilt: A Novel is an amazing book to read if you love suspense and mystery, especially on any trip or to read on the beach or in the woods. Nonetheless, I must say that you could be triggered in some parts, and you have to be aware of that. There are some really serious and harsh parts. I rate this book four stars out of four.
