Ron Slaughter, a high school bass player, who wants to chase his dream of becoming a rockstar, composing music and writing lyrics for his high school rock band, of which his twin brother, Bing, is also a part. However, Bing’s priorities lay elsewhere, diligently studying for their upcoming SATs exam in order to get into his dream college to pursue his passion for film. Unfortunately, on the eve of their most important exam, the two brothers get wrapped up in a series of strange events involving golfers, a possessed dagger, and a demon summoning. To make matters worse, human sacrifices are required for the summoning, and it turns out that the lucky few selected against their will are none other than the twins’ friends and bandmates, Kaitlyn and Prathamesh. Bing and Ron find themselves in a perilous journey of adventures and mystery as they try to save their friends, survive a demon summoning, and make it back in time for their SATs.

Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a fast-paced story, taking place in the span of a single night, without leaving the reader feeling overwhelmed. In fact, I enjoyed the rapid progression of the story as the author got to the meat of it all without dragging out any particular plotline. The many plot twists kept me on my toes and demanded my full attention to keep up with the story. The main characters were relatable, and enough backstory and detail were provided for the twin brothers for the reader to create an emotional bond with them.

However, in contrast to the twins, I wish that the secondary characters were better fleshed out for the reader to empathize with. For example, the only relevant information we get on one of the twins’ friend, Kaitlyn, is that she is known for being late due to her long showers. In addition, because the story takes place in one night, the author frequently switches between characters’ points of view, as indicated with asterisks. This can cause some confusion for the reader in knowing which scene they are in, and which character is talking. This continues as the story progresses and more characters are introduced.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The story is engaging, entertaining, and knows how to retain your attention. The different adventures that the brothers face put you on edge of your seat with the right amount of plot twists to keep you wanting more. This fast-paced story makes every moment count. This book also has no grammatical errors, it is professionally edited.

This book is recommended for ages 16 and up due to the use of profanity and detailed descriptions of violence, such as gun usage and killing. The book also contains mentions of vomiting. There is no explicit sexual content but a brief mention of nudity.
