Old World by Jake D. Aupperle is a crime thriller about an Amish family in Greene Road in a community named Outercourse. Riehl Joseph was murdered, and his farm and house were burnt. The Riehl family was contracted with Shi Bing Street bang on an illegal business. After a certain visit of Mr. Chan to Joseph's residence, he decided to cut all ties with these men by going to the police department to end the contract. The Shi Bing street gang seems to be considered responsible for the fire incident and murder of Riehl Joseph. After much investigation and findings by Detective Kaiser, who was responsible for this fire incident, clearly showed. Who could it be? Detective Jane Kaiser and the CEO of High Wattage Inc, Topher Watts, arrived in Lancaster and would play important roles in this story.

This book revealed some societal ills being initiated by the police. I found this part very real and true. It was quite a nice family the author portrayed at the beginning of the book. Elizabeth's brothers were something else. They added humor and fascinating moments in the book. While they were having dinner, Joseph had to stop Ezekiel from using the grindstone except for sharpening farm equipment. I was amused by this special moment and how Ezekiel quickly asked if his brother Amos could carry on with his “kung fu” practice in his underwear.

From that point, Detective Jane Kaiser's name pops out in this book. I knew she would be my favorite character because of how the author portrayed her. I loved the scenario that took place at the airport. Detective Jane Kaiser has gone to pick up Topher Watts. Topher Watts wasn't like what Detective Kaiser envisioned. Topher Watts drove out from the airport in a company car while Detective Kaiser waited till there was no one else from the flight. It would have been amusing to watch her wait at the airport if this book were a movie. Reading her character development was my favorite aspect of the book.

While reading the book, I discovered many things that amazed me, especially the Amish, who don't participate in many activities. The author described them with utmost perfection. It was believed in the book that the Amish don't use phones. All these aroused my interest in finding more about the Amish people. They seem to represent the title of the book. They were termed as "pacifists" in the book. There's a lot the reader would learn from this book.

While reading, I came across many errors that I found very disturbing. This is the only negative aspect of the book for me. Old World by Jake D. Aupperle wasn't professionally edited. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading fictional books on primitive societies and cultures. If you enjoy crime thrillers, then this book is for you.

It seems very convenient to me that the gang was considered responsible for the fire and the death. I guess I’ll just have to read this to find out.

I had to chuckle at the name of the Amish town in this story, "Outercourse," which sounds like a play on the famous Intercourse, Pennsylvania. The author may not have understood the correct definition of the actual town because his play on words doesn't work. Thanks for your review.

I like how the book bring up the reality of corrupt police and the influence organised crime groups have over civilians. Well done on the review.
