Death in Paris is the first book of the Màiri Maguire Cozy Mysteries, written by Kate Darroch. The heroine of this lovely story, Màiri Maguire, is a Scots Irish schoolteacher living in Glasgow. Brian, a geologist at sea most of the year, was her boyfriend for twelve years. When he breaks up with her to marry a bar girl he met in Singapore, Màiri decides to accept a job offer in Turkey as Head of English Studies at a top school. Her friend Lianna, who runs a bakery in Glasgow, is unhappy with her life too. So, she promptly accepts a proposal of becoming an assistant in Turkey, and the ladies decide to spend a few days in Paris before taking the train to Istanbul.

But what started as a dreamy summer holiday in France soon turned into an unforeseen experience when Lianna got arrested for the murder of Charlie Stout, whose body got thrown from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Màiri then struggles to solve the murder and free her friend.

I enjoyed every bit of this creative and clever whodunnit plot. It was a good-humored mystery that kept me hooked. Above all, I appreciated its lovely ambiance, and Paris was much more than a setting here. Readers get to follow the protagonist as she roams the beautiful city, and I loved this aspect; it was what I liked the most about the book. For instance, in an enchanting passage, Màiri attends the early Mass at the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur. The protagonist didn't know that there was a Perpetual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament there, and neither did I. It was a particularly heart-warming part.

Also, as Màiri investigates, readers get to follow the character's delightful love of good food. And where better than France could gourmets wish to be? Among other delights, I vicariously appreciated croissants, crepes Suzette, Vichyssoise soup, chocolate cake, and wait for it, French fries! I enjoyed this almost as much as the picturesque settings.

All in all, I gladly give this book the highest rating: 4 out of 4 stars. There were no negatives worth mentioning. With a little over 150 pages, I thought it was a fast, fun, and wholesome reading experience that reminded me of Agatha Christie's classic mysteries. Although it had a few unusual Scottish terms I had to check, it seemed professionally edited. I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy a cozy mystery; it would surely make an entertaining movie or TV series.

It really hurts to end a relationship after a very long time; twelve years! But I am happy that Mairi has a good friend, Lianna, to strengthen her spirit. Death in Paris, surely, paints a vivid picture of life in the society.

A mystery book with less than 150 pages is really a whirlwind of suspenseful events. Really interested in reading this book.

I've always loved reading books with a thriller genre and this book really sparks my interest. Also, I love France as a country especially their cuisines. The fact that it is incorporated in the book is a chef's kiss. I'm moving forward to this book. Nice review!
