Review of The War of Heaven and Earth

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The War of Heaven and Earth" by Jevon E. Thompson.]
The War of Heaven and Earth is a fictional story loosely based on angels and demons. It depicts the age-long battle of dominion over earth between the Els, mostly the D'ani angels, and their demon counterparts, the Baalinians. The author closely follows the lives of Ra Ellis McNeal, who is one of the D'ani angels sent on earth for a critical mission, and Freddy Scott. Ra is to increase the light quotient of the earth to halt the plan of the dark Lord Baal, leader of the Baalinians, to turn the earth into hell.
Ra was born into a powerful family and was guided and protected by his mother and powerful great-grandmother McCada. Due to his father's early demise, he traveled to Seattle to make peace with himself and get to know more about his father. Freddy, on the hand, was born and raised under a series of unfortunate circumstances. As someone meant to increase the light quotient of the earth, he was manipulated and finally succumbed to the high lord of the Baalinian clan. Would Freddy be restored? Would Ra fulfill his assignment? These answers and more would be found on the pages of The War of Heaven and Earth.
Firstly, I loved how Jevon E. Thompson described the environment. The setting was quite detailed in most parts of the book. I enjoyed the little humor and comedy that came in some scenes. The romance part was also significant; Jevon E. Thompson did an excellent job here.
The book had a promising beginning — a war between angelic and demonic clans, which initially got my attention. However, it became boring along the line. Introducing some characters was unnecessary, and some plots were not quite connected to the story. Also, the character development was not well done between the book's two main characters. Freddy Scott had a better character build-up. It was shown how he became what he was and why he became those things. On the other hand, Ra had a poor character build-up, though his part was more exciting and fun to read than Freddy's. Overall, the book lacked the necessary thriller it was supposed to give its readers, given its dark fantasy theme. However, it was enough to make me keep reading till the end. The title betrayed the story itself; for a book about the war between angelic and demonic entities, there was a lot less action until towards the end, when most of it occurred.
Aside from the issues mentioned above, the editing was well done, as there were only a few errors. I liked how the timeline of every character was adjusted to match the story. The book quickly painted a clear picture for the reader. The book was a little less predictable.
I give The War of Heaven and Earth 2 out of 4 stars because the negative aspects far outweigh the positives. The ideal rating for this book, however, is 2.5. I'll recommend this book to adult fantasy readers.
