Review of The Sleeper List
I had no idea what a “sleeper” was until I started reading The Sleeper List by Patrick Oster. For those of you who don’t know, Soviet sleeper agents used false identities in America for espionage. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, most of them came home. But not all.
The Sleeper List opens by introducing Michael Trick, found to have parents who were sleeper agents. All he wished for was to lead a quiet life with his son in America with no fuss. His wish bubble is burst soon when Viktor Sokolov, a Russian is sent to persuade (blackmail, more like it) Trick into using his skills. Quick thinking helps Trick to make sure that he is not completely being under surveillance and he contacts the FBI for help. Soon, he becomes a double agent, working alongside both teams while at the same time, fighting for his own life.
I loved this book! It was gripping till the very end and had amazing plot and character development. The suspense was handled very beautifully and I was glad that it was unpredictable. Trick is constantly being watched over by the Russian spies as well as the FBI. I could feel Trick’s anguish, the spy head’s frustration and the tactics of the FBI throughout the book. Each character was introduced with clarity and I had no problem with having different storylines running through my head.
Violence and goriness of the crimes were at a minimum, but it is not a book for the faint-hearted for sure. Foul language was also very minimal. If you like espionage stories, I would highly recommend it. The adult scenes were more towards being factual. But I still think it’s not suitable for young adults. The difficulties of being a spy, especially a double agent, are portrayed well throughout the book. There is a lot to learn from it as well! I, myself got a glimpse into the world of spies and what a hard life they lead. Even with the help of the FBI, Trick seemed to struggle through everyday life.
Unfortunately, there were editing, spelling and grammatical errors throughout, hence I can only award it 3 out of 4 stars though my heart desperately wants to award it full. I hope these errors can be rectified soon because I definitely want to recommend this book to a lot of people! To the author, I shower my heartfelt gratitude for giving me a book which satiated my thriller thirst to a maximum.
