Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Hattie Vavaseur, written by M. Rebecca Wildsmith, follows Hattie as she finds herself in the middle of a slow-burning mystery. After losing her memory, she finds herself in a strange location, filled with odd people who help her unravel more about her past and present.
This book is enjoyable for those who enjoy a slow-burn plot. The author does an excellent job slowly doling out just enough information to keep the reader engaged and on their toes. There are a number of mysteries and subtle twists and turns that finally reach a crescendo in the book's last few chapters. Hattie has to unlock various secrets ranging from where she is to solving a grievous murder that's taken place, and each mystery emerges at just the right time.
Each character in Hattie Vavaseur is interesting and creative. Even some of the secondary characters who we don't spend a lot of time with have their own unique characteristics and distinct voice. Most of the characters also experience clear growth throughout the book, which was quite satisfying to see.
I found the women in this book particularly engaging. Hattie is both abrasive and tender, two extremes that she oscillates between throughout the book. As Hattie begins to recover her memories, we learn that she has been through a lot in her life. Though Hattie has donned a tough and prim exterior, a woman of intelligence, sensitivity, and kindness lies underneath. She befriends Vamelda, a shrewd businesswoman who has a flair for the dramatic, often to Hattie's chagrin. These two make quite a pair, which leads to some humorous exchanges.
Randomly, throughout the book, there are hidden messages for the reader within the text. This felt like more of a distraction than anything else; honestly, I thought they were typos at first. I don't think these secret messages enhanced the book, so I would've preferred those to have been omitted.
Still, I enjoyed Hattie Vavaseur and would rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The characters are entertaining, and the story is very well thought out. I really enjoyed the book's structure and how each mystery unfurls and builds upon the previous. While I didn't love how the book ended, it still wraps everything up satisfactorily and even includes some important life lessons.
I would recommend Hattie Vavaseur to people who enjoy slow-burn mysteries, particularly those with romantic and supernatural plotlines. Readers of classic literature may also enjoy this as it has touches of themes and even some of the language from those novels.
